Review Summary
The authur creates a hero in waiting type in Dain, or prince Faldain as we later learn as the main charcter of the book. The noval begins with the king being betrayed by his brother and barely escaping with his life. In order to gather the neccessary force to accomplish this coup his brother has allied with the evil people of Gant. The king manages to recover a holy relic of immense power, the chalice, and his kids but he knows that he must hide them before he can reclaim his kingdom and so he takes his children to Jorb the dwarf until he can come back for them. There's an accident and the king never returns and the royal pair of siblings end up growing into their teens in the care of the gruff yet loving dwarf. This all changes on day when a rival dwarf clan attacks killing Jorb and ultimately killing Dains sister as well. After an encounter with the lord of a neighboring hold Dain decides to hang around and lives like a dog trying to survive. The knights decide that the lad is good luck and much to the dismay of the prince of the land the knights decide to foster Dain and train him in the duties and skills of a knight. It's this decision to become a knight and the resulting attention of Lord Oldfrey that will set him on the path of his destiny and earn him a lifelong enemy in Prince Garivil, a fellow foster.
