Casserine opens with the two main characters confronting one another in a space hospital, where Sergeant Jake Matthews wakes up strapped to a gurney. After a brief struggle, his attending doctor, Lieutenant Adrian Byers convinces him of his whereabouts. She returns to the heavy gravity planet Casserine with him, where Matthews had been wounded in a battle with space pirates in his duties as the outpost's sole sentry. They fall in love, and all is well until Matthews is recruited to battle an alien horde he earned a medal of honor fighting against years before.
With his closest friends, Charlie Mercer and Tim Dougherty, Jake leads an armada against the seeded monsters, left as a form of weapon to halt the expanding Earth colonies. Once Jake learns the origin of the monsters, he sets out to defeat the ones responsible, propelling all of known and unknown space into intergalactic war.
In addition to the monstrous aliens, Matthews creates a battle plan to defeat, he must cope with an Earth Control unfeeling of its own space force losses. After overthrowing Earth Control, with the help of a renegade isolationist United States, Matthews utilizes newly discovered jump gates to surprise and defeat the alien races using the monstrous bugs to halt human expansion. His romance with Lieutenant Adrian Byers endures monsters, aliens, Earth Control, and space pirates as she endeavors to stay as close to the Marine she married as intergalactic war permits.
