Review Summaries
"Soren, Glyfie, Digger, and Twilight continue their life at the Tree. Their extremely intelligent but snooty friend, Otulissa, has begun researching on the strange powerful powers of the flecks, or bits of iron. She has begun to learn about higher magnetics, but Dewlap, one of the rybs at the tree, has forbidden anyone to read about higher magnetics, she thinks that the obscure branch of science is nothing but "dark magic."
Meanwhile, the chaw of chaws (Soren, Glyfie, Digger, Twilight, Martin, Ruby, and Otulissa) have been given a mission: they are to infiltrate St. Aggies Academy and find out what the Pure Ones are up to.
When they arrived to St. Aggies, and convinced the leaders with a more or less true story of all of them coming from the Northern Kingdoms, they spread out. They resist moon-blinking by reciting and memorizing the legends of Gahoole. They learn more about the properties of the flecks, and that the Pure Ones are inserting flecks into the nests of eggs! They also find out that some Pure Ones have turned traitor against the Pure Ones but are actually working with St. Aggies. Realizing that they can't stay in the canyons much longer, they formulate an escape plan.
The escape plan goes a bit awry and the St. Aggie Owls discover the escape of the chaw of chaws. A fierce battle breaks out and Soren barely escapes as his shaft of tail feathers breaks.
When they're out of the canyons, the owls realize that Soren was in no condition to fly. Faithfully, they stay with him in the forest of Ambala, where Soren's condition worsens. Soren is saved by a flying snake named Slynella, whose forked tongue holds a powerful antidote against infections. Glyfie and Soren are overjoyed to see that Hortense, their friend who they thought had perished in her fall over the cliff, is alive, though her feathers have turned white.
When the chaw of chaws arrive, they find out that the Tree is preparing for war. Kludd (aka Metal Beak), Soren's murderous brother, had survived and was mustering the Pure Ones for a siege.
