Review Summary
Meg Murry O'Keefe is now happily married to Calvin and they live in their own home.   She was visiting her mom for Thanksgiving Dinner when it all started.   Her dad got a phone call from the president that Mad Dog, a terrorist, was going to start a nuclear war that could destroy the whole galaxy. As the wind and the storm outside pick up, Meg's mother in law starts saying an old rune of protection, which quiets the storm down.   Charles Wallence, Meg's brother, realizes that the rune may be very important and Mrs. O'Keefe tells him that he has to stop Mad Dog.   For some reason he goes out to a special place in their yard and meets a unicorn who assists him in his quest.   They travel through time and Charles Wallence becomes many different people who were part of Mrs. O'Keefe's past and learns about the history of her family.   Meg is kything with him, also known as reading his thoughts and seeing what he sees feeling what he feels and hearing what he hears, the whole time.
He becomes Brandon, the brother of a man married to an Indian woman named Zylle. The towns people accuse her of being a witch and are about to hang her, when Brandon and Charles chant the rune and save her.   Then he becomes Chuck or Mrs. O'Keefe's brother, and found out about their mom and her marriage to a second husband and how he gave Chuck an extreme head injury. Next it was Mathew that Charles Wallence went into, a crippled young man who lived with his family and the family of his good friend, Zillah.   His twin, Brandon, came back from battle with no hope, but Mathew encouraged him.   He decided to go help settle land in Vespugia, the same place Mad Dog came from, and wishes to take Zillah with him as his wife.   Back at the house, Meg learns about why Mad Dog is the way Mad Dog is, because his mother was bitter and raised him to try to destroy the world because she was bitter because of her past.   His mothers name was Zillah.   Charles knows what he must do, send Zillah to Bran, but Zillah's father will not allow it.
