Review Summaries
"METROPOLIS (Metoroporisu) is a Japanese animated movie directed by Rintaro in 2001. The setting is the futuristic city of Metropolis. Duke Red is conspiring against the government and hopes to overthrow it on the occasion of the celebration of the completion of the towering Ziggurat, a monument built by his society. Duke Red has even asked the sulfurous Dr. Laughton to create the ultimate robot which should rule the country from the Ziggurat tower. Unfortunately, Rock, the jealous adopted son of Duke Red, destroys Dr. Laughton's laboratory and Tima, Laughton's creation, is saved by the young Kenichi and his uncle. Tima, a young teenager, is not aware of her real status and becomes fond of Kenichi. While the revolution, whose leaders are manipulated by Duke Red, is raging on the surface, Tima and his new friends try to escape Rock through the three subterranean zones, inhabitated by robots, which lay under Metropolis.
