Alejandro Amenabar's film "Abre Los Ojos" aka "Open Your Eyes" was the inspiration for Cameron Crowe's remake called "Vanilla Sky" in which Tom Cruise starred in 2001 along with Penelope Cruz reprising her role.
The very handsome Cesar (Eduardo Noriega) finds the love of his life in actress Sofia (Penelope Cruz) that he met at his birthday party. It was actually his friend Pelayo's date that he flirted and spent the night with. But Cesar is very popular with the ladies and the woman he last had an affair with, Nuria, shows up after he left Sofia's apartment. Cesar gets in Nuria's car and she drives off the road, killing herself and disfiguring Cesar. He is then tormented with the fact that the doctors are unable to fix his face and offer him a prosthetic mask to wear. The story flashes back and forth with him in a mental institution and what is percieved to be the past as he tells his psychiatrist Antonio (Chete Lara) that Sofia has been replaced by Nuria. Atonio has Cesar believe he is on trial for the murder of Nuria but Cesar is trying to figure out what is going on. He ultimately does when he gets out of the institution and speaks with Duvernois (Gerard Barray). Is it virtual reality? Is it a dream?
