Review Summary
A nuclear test in the arctic awakens and frees a prehistoric and carnivorous dinosaur that makes its way down the east coast of North America, wreaking havoc on ships, lighthouses, and ultimately the streets of lower Manhattan. Tom Nesbitt (Hubschmid), one of the atomic scientists on the original site, tries hard to convince his superiors and other authorities, but has no luck until the monster arrives in New York City. Dr. Lee Hunter (Raymond) readily believes him, but her mentor Prof. Thurgood Elson (Kellaway) takes a bit longer. This 1953 movie was inspired by the Ray Bradbury story "The Fog Horn," although it has little in common with that poignant tale besides a scene in which the dinosaur destroys a lighthouse. It has a by-now familiar plot dating from at least "King Kong" (although it came out a year before the very similar "Godzilla"), and is memorable for containing the first full-scale model work by stop-action great Ray Harryhausen.
