Review Summaries
"The cursed videotape from Ringu and Ringu 2 was not, as it turned out, the first incarnation of the fatal power possessed by Sadako. The death toll reaches as far back as the 1950s, back to when Sadako was a teenage girl and outcast by all who met her. 'She's weird,' they say. 'She's a freak.' When a fellow actress dies in disturbing circumstances (and her face frozen in terror), the drama troupe turns against its newest apprentice - Yamamura Sadako. Only the young man on the sound stage, Toyama, seems to care about this girl. Slowly a gentle friendship and eventual love blossoms between the two, with Sadako discovering powers of healing as a result of this new trust that are quite different from her normal death-riddled existence. But there is a secret to Sadako...and unbeknowst to her, the fiancee of a reporter who was struck down years ago during an exhibition of the powers of Sadako's mother is determined to take her revenge. "RING 0 : BIRTHDAY is a movie directed by Norio Tsuruta in 1999. This prequel of RING and RING 2, shot after these two films, describes events that happened some 30 years before the appearance of the killer videotape. In this film, Sadako is the main character. She's a young girl with paranormal powers who has joined a theatrical company. Soon a young actress playing the main character of the play dies during a rehearsal and Sadako replaces her. Meanwhile, a journalist who's investigating the mysterious death of Sadako's mother, tries to find Sadako. She blames her for the death of her fiancé and wants to avenge him. When she finally meets the young girl, she's not so sure anymore that Sadako is responsible for the deaths that surround her. She has noticed on a number of photos that there was always a little girl present when the murders happen. And, the strangest of all, is that nobody has ever remarked her. The journalist is now persuaded that there is a ghost following Sadako."
