Aly is 17 and the daughter of famous parents. Her mother is the Lioness, the first woman knight and king's champion of Tortall and her father is Tortall's spymaster. Her oldest brother is a knight in training and her twin brother is a mage in training. Both of her parents want her to 'grow up'and find her way in life. But when Aly tells them that she wants to be a spy they both tell her NO! So Aly decides to leave for a while so her parents can cool off. But while sailing away she is captured by pirates and sold as a slave. The patriarch of the family she is sold to is a relative of the throne and has a wife with two children and two girls from a previous marraige, Sarai and Dove. The family she is sold into is told they must leave the land because the king no longer trusts them. Aly is approached by a god, the trickster Kyprioth, and given a wager. If she can keep Sarai and Dove alive till the end of the summer than he will send her home to her family. Aly accepts the wager figuring this is a great way to prove to her dad that she can be a spy.

Alianne (Aly) of Pirates Swoop, daughter of the famed Alanna the Lionnes is taken captive and sold as a slave in a neighboring island country, the Copper Isles. Taken into the kind household of the Balitangs, Aly's plans to escape change as a local god, Kyprioth says if Aly can keep the Balitang children alive through the summer, he will convince her dad to let Aly become a spy or body guard. As Aly does her duty she realizes that her job is all part of a great trick of Kyprioth's: trying to get a raka (brown skinned) queen on the throne instead of a luarin (white skinned) king.
