Review Summaries
"Ojo and his Unc Nunkie, residents of an isolated part of Munchkinland, are poor and nearly out of food, so they decide to leave their home. Their first stop is the house of Dr. Pipt, the Crooked Magician, who is making more of the Powder of Life that brought Jack Pumpkinhead, the Sawhorse, and the Gump to life in The Marvelous Land of Oz. His wife only wants it to bring a patchwork girl to life to be her servant, but in the sudden transformation, the girl upsets the Liquid of Petrifaction and turns both the wife and Unc Nunkie to cold marble! (An irritating phonograph player also comes to life.) "Scraps," as the Patchwork Girl is named, goes on the road with Ojo to find the magic talismans that will return the two frozen grownups to life. Shaggy Man, Dorothy, and the Tin Woodman play substantial roles in the book, which also introduced the Woozy and the Glass Cat "Bungle," and takes its characters to the lands of the Tottenhots, the giant captive Yoop, and the war between the Hoppers and the Horners (who live in houses decorated with radium!). This, the seventh full Oz book, appeared in 1913, and Baum pretty much published an Oz book every year thereafter."
David Loftus, Resident L. Frank Baum Scholar

"In another story in the Land of Oz, the Munchin boy Ojo must find the magical cure to free his Unc Nunkie from the spell that made him a marble statue. Full of adventures, exploring, and magicians stirring up trouble, this story winds through several counties of Oz. With the help of the living Patchwork Girl, Scraps, Ojo journeys throughout Oz, meeting all kinds of special creatures on his way, to save his uncle."
Jessica Marler, Resident L. Frank Baum Scholar
