Review Summaries
"By late in the 23rd century, humankind has divided into the hardly civilized "Brutals" and the overly effete and mind-centered "Immortals." The Brutals worship a flying god-head called Zardoz, which gives them instructions and weapons, but the Immortals have been stricken by a disease that saps all motivation and fills them with a terrible lassitude. Zed (Connery, fresh from all his early Bond films), a brawny Exterminator-class Brutal, discovers a library and is taught to read by a mysterious stranger. When Zed learns something odd about Zardoz (from wiZARDofOZ), he sets out to discover the secrets of his god and the Immortals. John Boorman wrote and directed this film in 1974, right after "Deliverance"; though conceptually intriguing, it suffers from poor acting, a tiny budget that forced laughable sets and costumes, and location shooting trapped in County Wicklow, Ireland within 10 miles of Boorman's home. There is also considerable (topless female) nudity. An odd, post-Sixties relic."
David Loftus, Resident Scholar
