"Two Thousand Maniacs is a 1964 “slasher” flick which approached cult status in southern drive-ins. Despite its $62,000 budget, its sound and color are superb. It seems Pleasant Valley, Georgia (Pop: 2,000) has planned a Civil War centennial of sorts. So two locals switch road signs to detour carloads of unsuspecting northerners, including 1963 Playmate Connie Mason, to be the mayor's (Allen) “guests of honor.” After a rollicking barbecue, the hero, who was en route to a history teachers' convention in Atlanta, notices that several “guests” are missing. No wonder. That day's festivities have already included such bloody mutilations as a “horse race” and a creative “barrel roll.” Through a “Twilight Zone” ending, the locals congratulate each other, pondering whether their NEXT Centennial will bring “rocket ships” to their long-vanished town."
