Review Summaries
"EQUILIBRIUM is a movie written and directed by Kurt Wimmer in 2002. After the end of World War III, the authorities of the new state of Libria force the surviving citizens to inject themselves, on a daily basis, with the new Prozium drug. This drug annihilates the feelings of the one who takes it. No feelings means no hate, no anger, no love and no war. Clerk John Preston is a member of the special forces of Libria whose mission is to track down and eliminate those who don't take their daily Prozium and haven't given up the pleasures art or freedom of thought can bring. As he's forced to kill his partner who had become a rebel, Preston starts to wonder why so many people risk their lives in order to feel again. He stops taking Prozium and the idea of joining the resistance is beginning to appeal to him. He falls in love with Emily Watson and decides to become a rebel and help the resistance to overthrow the Libria government and the Father, head of this intolerant state. "

"Welcome to Libria - a future society where all human emotion has been subdued by drugs. No one gets angry, jealous or violent - so there are no wars - but no one feels love, sadness or joy... Books, films and music are banned in case they incite 'sense crimes', which lead to instant torture and death. The rules are upheld by the clerics and they have total control over others lives until one day, Cleric John Preston forgets to take the drugs that keep him emotion free. Okay, so the story is a little far fetched and there are some big steals from 1984 and 12 Monkeys - as well as The Matrix. But there is plenty of action, and lots of repressed feelings coming to life... it's the best kind of movie for a Saturday night in."
