Review Summaries
"Severian is a toturer in a post-nuclear society with a dying sun. There was a Conciliator in the past who was able to perform all sorts of magical wonders and powers. The Conciliator has returned in the form of Severian, yet he does not know he is the Savior of Urth (the world of Earth). He is cast from the guild of the torturers after giving his lover, Thecla, a knife to kill herself. He is given a sword named Terminus Est (End of Division) and is given the position of Executioner. He travels to Thrax where he meets many women and is given the Claw of the Conciliator which can restore the dead and bestow magical powers. He battles many beings which are sent to kill him by outside forces. But they are not the antagonist. The antagonist is the dying sun which if it is not saved will destroy the world. Through this journey he learns about himself and his duty to the Urth. He is soon crowned as Autarch and he is sent to a world to be judged. If he succeeds he will indeed bring new life to a dying world."
