Peter Parker(Toby Maguire) is a science nerd in high school who's only wish is to have the love of his life, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) to notice him, and when she does everything is good but he's too nervous to tell her how he feels. So he remains a friend in the background until a field trip to a science lab and a bite from a genetically altered spider turns him into the super hero Spiderman.
Everything seems to be great, Spiderman gets to swing around buildings and save old ladies from getting robbed and life is swell until an unfortunate accident involving his uncle changes Peter's life. Peter has to go up against Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), a villian out to destroy Oscorp company.
Peter goes through an emotional and personal journey with the tragedy of his uncle, having to watch his best friend date the girl of his dreams and finally having to decide which is more important, a life for Peter Parker or the responsibilities of Spiderman.

In this superhero coming of age story, young (and geeky) Peter Parker is given amazing spider-like powers after being bitten by a genetically engineered spider on a class field trip. But after he fails to stop a criminal who later kills his Uncle Ben, Peter learns the greatest lesson of all: With great power must come great responsibility. During the course of the flick, Peter has to try to make sure nothing happens to his Aunt May while exchanging blows with the Green Goblin, the chemically altered and insane Norman Osborn, who just so happens to be his best friend's dad. "Spider-Man" is wonderful: The action scenes are big and in your face, the acting is some of the best I've seen, and the special effects are just plain amazing. Spider-Man is literally the best film of 2002, and the second best movie that I've ever seen, just behind Ghostbusters.

This is a VERY good film adaptation of the comic book super-hero, Spider-Man. This story relates how a teenager gained the proportionate strength, speed, and web-shoooting ability of a spider. Exccellent movie, must see.

Geeky Peter Parker (Maguire) faces the normal teen problem of adjusting to the world and fitting in, when a genetically altered spider changes that forever. Now blessed with superhero powers, Parker must face his destiny and save the world, not to mention love interest Mary Jane (Dunst) from the menacing Green Goblin (Dafoe). Spider-Man is a great spin of a story and a lot of fun.

This is the long-awaited movie of the comics Spiderman. And its brilliant! It follows the life of Peter Parker a quiet, nerd who is in love with the popular and attractive Mary Jane Watson. Although they have been neighbours since the age of six, Parker has yet to make a move and his rich friend Harry swoops in and takes her.
However in the midst of this he is bitten by a genetically enhanced spider with all the best qualities from several different species. Staggering home from the field trip he falls unconcious in his room. However when he wakes he discovers that he no longer needs glasses and has developed bulging muscles. In the school canteen he discovers he shoots web, spraying a bully with a tray of food accidently. This ensues with a fight where Parker discovers his super strength, agility and 'spider sense'.
To impress Mary Jane, Parker tries to make some money for a car at a wrestling match. He practices his new secret skills and enters the ring as the 'human spider for' the announcer to change his name to 'spiderman.' He defeats the ring champion to only get a small amount of money to the promised amount. As the match-owner is robbed Parker turns his back and allows the thief to escape- its not his problem.
Waiting outside the ring he waits for his uncle to pick him up, only to discover that the thief he allowed to escape lead to tragic consequences. Parker vows to live up to his responsibilities and use his powers for good. He becomes 'Spiderman.'
Meanwhile we see the beginnings of his adversary the 'Green Goblin.' A scientist who becomes strong, violent and insane after an experiment goes wrong.
The Green Goblin makes chaos while Spiderman tries to help others. The Goblin wants them to be allies and rule the city but Spiderman refuses, promising to stop him. This makes the Goblin find new tactics as he tries to find out who Spiderman is and harm the people his alter-ego Parker loves. This works out to a climatic finish with a face off between the two...
A great film that lives up to the comics. A few differences to give it some freshness to even die-hard followers. Humourous in parts, with awe inspiring action and special effects. A must see film! You won't be able to wait for the sequel.

Director Sam Raimi and screenwriter David Koepp bring the 1960s Marvel comic book hero to the big screen in a live action and CGI mix set in the present. Awkward, shy, and bookish high school senior Peter Parker (Maguire) is bitten by a genetically engineered spider at a museum and acquires superhuman strength, lightning fast reflexes, a sixth sense for impending danger, and the ability to spin webbing that captures objects or enables him to swing on threads across the skyline. His wealthy classmate Harry Osborn's scientist father Norman (Dafoe), desperate to win a military contract, becomes the insane and dangerous Green Goblin in an industrial accident, while Peter pines for his lovely and popular neighbor, Mary Jane Watson (Dunst). Although the special effects are rather so-so, the human drama in this movie (boosted by fine performances by Maguire and Dunst, and great cameos by Cliff Robertson as Uncle Ben Parker and J.K. Simmons as newspaper publisher J. Jonah Jameson) is reasonably solid. Not a superb piece of work, but a creditably entertaining one.
