Accompanied by her friend and teacher, Numair Salmalín, the young wild mage, Daine Sarassri, travels to Fief Dunlath, a district north of Tortall, to find out the mysterious source of power that radiates from this area. There they meet-up with the pack of wolves, old friends of Daine, who are embittered by the destruction that the woodcutters and miners are doing to their forest. Through their investigation they discover that evil sorcerers and Immortals, involved with neighboring country Carthak, are excavating a precious and magical mineral from the mines, which they evidently will use for power to rage war against the Kingdom of Tortall.
In this book, Daine develops her skills to a further extent by being able to change into animal form and enter the mind of animals to experience their essence. Together with her animal and human friends, she manages to thwart the plans of these evil plotters by overtaking the Dunlath castle and hunting down Yolane, a heinous conspirator. Numair and sorcerer Tristan Staghorn lock in a magical battle wherein the latter loses and is turned into a tree.
