TV-Commentary - Doctor Who
Who was the best Doctor?
The answer is obvious--Tom Baker. He was the most amusing, liveliest Doctor there was. Colin Baker can't even be considered--he was a Tom Baker wannabe. Sylvester McCoy was a carbon copy of the Second Doctor, who, while humorous, couldn't hold a candle to Tom Baker. The first Doctor was too old and feeble to be amusing. Jon Pertwee wasn't bad, but was a bit too serious; the same with Peter Davidson.

No, the winner hands-down is Tom Baker. Who else once threatened to kill someone with a Jelly Baby? Who else cracked jokes with Cybermen or Davros? Who else had a longer scarf?

Who do you think was the best Doctor?

As a die-hard Tom Baker fan I have to say I was surprised to have to admit that Christopher Eccleston had moved ahead of him into the first spot in my heart. That took a lot, but the fine stories and his very vivid depiction of the character were impossible to resist. It's just a shame he didn't do another series!

I heard that RTD is trying to axe Doctor Who after the 4th series because he's tired. I am not too big a fan of the new series, but 4 of the last 5 episodes have been brilliant from Human Nature- Sound Of Drums, with only Utopia being bad. 2nd doctor best ever.

1. Second Doctor 2. Fourth 3. Third 4. Five 5. First 6. Eight 7. Seventh & Sixth. Or, if new series count, 7. Nineth 8. Tenth 9. Seventh and Sixth

This is my list of the 10 doctors in my order of preference: 1. Tom Baker 2. Patrick Troughton 3. Jon Pertwee 4. Peter Davison 5. Sylvester McCoy 6. William Hartnell 7. Colin Baker 8. Paul McGann (should've come back for the new series) 9. Chris Eccleston (only slightly better that David, at least Chris has some watchable stories) 10. David Tennant (he is so bad I want to kill myself- the only doctor who is so bad that I turn off the tv and don't turn it back on until it is finished- and by the way, yes I have seen Time and the Rani and Twin Dilemma and they are watchable)

DVD release update, classic Tom Baker story Robot is coming out and the (gulp) Colin Baker- not so classic story Timelash.

First of all Chris Eccleston is not the only dark doctor- Sylvester McCoy was a dark doctor, and Pat Troughton sometimes could be dark as well. Classic 7 doctors rule period, New series should get cancelled!! David Tennant is the worst EVER doctor and Chris Eccleston I prefer but he is still my 9th fave

The commentator Amie Rogers posts on 1/7/2007 10:01:50 AM

The best Doctor Who ever is definitely David Tennant. He is fantastic! Witty, slightly eccentric and good looking!

If any one here watched torchwood and started watching the sarah jane adventures you would of noticed something. In doctor who the reason why rose (Billie Piper) was sent into a parallel world and was never allowed to come back was because the rift was closed but in torchwood the whole programme is based on alien or alien atifactes coming threw the rift on every episode. In torchwood an alien was sent to the sun to be burnt but in the first episode of the sarah jane adventures the alien that was sent to be burnt in torchwood was there talking to sarah jane and asked her to contact her on this alien contact thing if she ever needed any help with poetry. If these programmes are ment to be linked why are they not properly connect comment me if you have noticed this

Lets not forget that the Doctor may be more than just another time lord. He may be the reincarnation of the the being known as the Other, who existed when Gallerfy was just beginning to become an advanced time traveling civilization. A realization that was canceled when it went off the air but might still return if they bring back the continuity. So even if Chris Eccleston was dark, it fits well into the concept that we really do not know the doctor.

The commentator P'Bantonox posts on 1/4/2007 3:32:59 PM

Christopher Eccleston was very dark. I love that he didn't just play the role as a clown or a naieve wayfarer. There's never really been a dark Doctor before, and him playing the role that way just sort of...fit. I mean, the Doctor's been all over the universe, seen countless people due to his direct/indirect actions, and he KNOWS it. He's been lied to, decieved, manipulated, ignored, tortured, and killed multiple times, and still he goes on, trying to do what he can to right the wrongs he sees. That's gotta have SOME impact on the psyche. At least, that's my view. Sure, he had his cheerful moments too, but you could get just as much of his mood from his body language and expression as you could from his words and tone of voice. It's a shame he left so soon...

It's like the Doctor says in 'The Empty Child' (s1e09)--- The Doctor:D'you know how long you can knock around space without happening to bump into Earth?--- Rose:Five days? Or is that just when we're out of milk?--- The Doctor:All the species in all the universe and it has to come out of a cow!

it wasnt hard to choose my fave it is Tom Baker. But second place is impossible it is between David Tennant and William Hartnell. I like them both...

The commentator P'Bantonox posts on 12/27/2006 11:13:13 AM

It's tough to say this, but Christopher Eccleston's my favourite doctor, even above Tom Baker (at least for now), which is saying something. And he's a great actor, you can tell. I wanted to see him in more seasons, at least one more. The transition from him to Tennant was hard for me to get over, since frankly, Tennant plays the Doctor completely different. Either that, or I just don't like the sideburns. Eccleston plays the Doctor as a dark character, which is interesting. The Doctor may change time, but time has also changed the Doctor... In order, I'd say they were Christopher Eccleston Tom Baker David Tennant Jon Pertwee Peter Davidson Patrick Troughton William Hartnell Sylvester McCoy Colin Baker --Eccleston and Tennant, maybe it's just the thrill of seing the show back. I'm sixteen right now, and grew up on reruns of the old show. Saw my first one by accident (Web Planet) when I was six and have been hooked since. TEN YEARS I've been waiting. Ten! --My reason for putting Tom Baker as my second is simply this: He animated the character. When he wasn't being childish, he was curious, yet never losing his cool. --Tennant Comes in at three due to 'regeneration shock.' I'm still not used to the character. But he fits. What made me realize he was good was his excellent acting in "New Earth." The episode itself may have been just a little contrived, but to erase his own mannerisms completely is a very hard thing to act. That got my respect. --Pertwee? Come on. He knew what he was doing. Clipped, knowledgable, and although occasionally his acting got a little stiff, he was a pleasure to watch. --Davidson was a little too serious, and perhaps he tried just a little too much, but I enjoy watching his episodes. He was very much the Time Lords' puppet, and that annoyed me. --Troughton was a one-up on Hartnell, because he had a sense of humour. --Hartnell was the original Doctor. What can I say? --To be frank, Colin Baker played an arrogant, conceited character, and I really didn't like watching him at all. So those are the short versions of my reasons. And I'm glad Doctor Who is back. Let's hope it goes on for a long, long time.

The commentator purple pie pete posts on 12/26/2006 11:41:11 PM

It's Pertwee by the length of the TARDIS, followed by Troughton! Tom Baker would have been Ok but for the terrible scripts he was given to work with, and i question his companions none of whom were up to scratch with the exception of Sarah Jane Smith. The series has fallen away considerably and while visually exciting the new series lacks any real Dr.Who feel about it.There is something not quite right about it at all.

Planet Strange posts on 12/26/2006 6:43:54 PM

Present series included, the title for Best Doctor is tied between Jon Pertwee and Christopher Eccleston. Second is Peter Davison, tied with David Tennant, and third is also a tie between Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy. Fourth is Pat Troughton, fifth is Will Hartnell, and dead last is Colin Baker (obviously) I hate to disillusion all 4th doctor fans out there, but Tom Baker was too much into jelly babies and that yo-yo. Jon Pertwee was the only Doctor in the original series to take the job seriously. He was a diplomat between Earth and aliens (or Silurians) who tried to bring the two nations to an agreement. Of course, 1974 was a disappointment, but the rest of Pertwee's career made the statement that Doctor Who was no longer a kiddie show. Unfortunately, the BBC tried to revert it to its previous kiddie state (this is merely my theory) in 1976. Not successful, since there were too many cartoonish villains (Sutekh and the Kraals, for instance), but a scar for the 4th Doctor. This is not to say he stank. The Key to Time series was memorable, as were his last few episodes; Logopolis superlatively so. As to Chris Eccleston, all Dr. Who fans were waiting for the answer to "what is Bad Wolf?!" Certain episodes also established the series's serious side, such as Father's Day. The 5th Doctor, like the 3rd Doctor, had the Master to deal with. However, besides him, the 5th Doctor also had sets that looked more realistic (that's another thing wrong with the 4th Doctor's reign until 1980). One cannot help watching The Invasion of Time and thinking the Vardans were huge...cucumbers?? Perhaps that's why the set crew went on strike. Sylvester McCoy is tied with Tom Baker because his episodes followed a similar layout; good at the beginning, disappointing in the middle (The Happiness Patrol), and then great at the end (though Ghost Light was overacted n some areas.) McCoy was serious at the end like Tom Baker and funny but memorable at the beginning. David Tennant isn't done yet (and apparently won't be for a while), but now, he appears to be on Davison's level; The Idiot's Lantern had a major continuity error and a cartoonish villain, but The Satan Pit and The Impossible Planet made up for that, as did Army of Ghosts and Doomsday. The improved Cybermen brought Tennant up to Davison's level, and he would have tied with Peertee had it not been for The Idiot's Lantern. The rest of the positions are self-evident. Pat Troughton had a good last season and, but the first season was the series trying to edge itself out of kiddie-show-dom. Will Hartnell had the curse of being the lead role in a kid show. And we all know what killed Colin Baker's reign. Anyhoo, that about summarizes it. Jon Pertwee is the standard for a serious Doctor. However, the series could easily use a Tom Baker clone (not possible, I know) to loosen things up a bit.
