Was Psi Cop Al Bester a ruthless killer, or just a guy trying to protect his own?
The popular line of thought has it that psi cop Al Bester was a ruthless mind control cop, who dissected Talia Winters and programmed Michael Garibaldi to be a robotic slave. However, it is possible to take a more sympathetic view of Bester. First of all, he cared deeply for his frozen girlfriend. Second of all, when he used Michael Garibaldi he was just trying to prevent telepaths from being killed by the virus being created by Edgars industries. In other words, he was just trying to protect his own. Although Bester the psi cop certainly had contempt for non-telepaths, it can't be said that most non-telepaths had nice feelings towards him. And Bester did offer to cooperate with Babylon 5's Captain John Sheridan in the war against the Shadows. So was Bester really such a bad guy?

Bester/Chekov was secretly in love with Sulu. When they were on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise didnt you ever notice how they always made eyes at each other. Sulu would turn slowly towards Bester/Chekov and he would get that silly grin on his face returning a knowing look. Viewers at the time had no idea what was really going on back in the late 60s. Now they know. Spending all that time together side by side really pushed those 2 into a torrid love affair.

Above all he respected order. The earth wasn't it. His small world he created was surrounded by chaos and hatred towards his kind. Man in such circumstances is searching for a way out, but with his principles of order, to set an example at a higher level. He was committed to the path against his own will, as he was born that way. Inescapable reality, a nightmare, a battle that only ends with death. He was in the centre of it, he felt it, there was no other future for him.

i liked bester. i love koeing's portrayl of checkov, of course. but it was great to see koeing as the bad guy for a change. you could tell he enjoyed the role. i think the guy is really an underrated actor. take care.

Practically all of the other first ones looked cool. My favorite was the one who hated Vorlons. That ship looked real cool.
