Operation Flashpoint
Grade C-

If you're looking for a realistic view of what it's like to fight in a squad in Europe in the 1980's, Operation Flashpoint is the first person shooter for you!

If you're looking for a remotely entertaining game, Operation Flashpoint should be avoided at all costs.

The first flaw is a lot of slow time during the mission--you literally spend several minutes running or driving a vehicle before a firefight without seeing the enemy. What's worse is that you can only save the game once during the mission. One save might be sufficient if you could save again during the mission and rewrite the previous save, but no, once you save during a mission, you can't override it; that sometimes mean you have to redo arduous running through the woods for several minutes to get to the fighting part of the game. There's no technical reason you shouldn't be able to overwrite the game save, so it must have been an artistic decision to give your character more quality time running through the woods.

You fight with a squad who roam around with your character. Sounds great, right? Wrong. Unless your character keeps up with the squad, they take out enemies before your character can get close. Enemies are typically killed at between 150-200 meters away, so if your character does manage to get them in your sites, they are little more than a tiny dot. The best I could get my character to do was to shoot at fleeing dots before my squad buddies ran up and killed those dots. You rarely get to shoot enemies up close.

Running ahead of your squad isn't advisable either. The enemy will often shoot your character dead even before you see them. It only takes 2 or 3 shots to kill your character, and these shots can be fired within two seconds or so. Most times my character was killed without every seeing the enemy up close, and many times my character was killed without even giving any idea where the shooting had come from.

The night missions are even worse because at least during the day you have a chance to see the moving dots that are the enemy. So your choices are to run ahead of your squad and try to kill the dots before your squad does, or stay behind your squad and let them do the killing.

This isn't a fun game. I even tried one of the single mission games where I was alone with a squad. My mission was simple, to steal a jeep surrounded by a few soldiers. But however I approached the jeep, my character would be killed, and the worst part was, my character would usually not even see the enemy that shot my character.

The outdoor scenary looks great. If the producers of this game had focused more on entertaining the player and less on realism, it could have been an enjoyable shooter. Instead, we have more of a "bang bang, the dot shot you" Delta Force type shooter.

the question isnt how many bullets are needed to kill someone, but how much damage someone can take before seizing to fight. in operation flashpoint i've been killed by 1-shots. and i've taken as many as 5 hits and still being able to run like hell. if you like quake-like games running around blipping blips with your weapon constantly for 2 hours operation flashpoint isnt your game. but for those who want just a tad of story and immersion its probably the best one out there. and about only being able to save once is to make you more careful about dying, in real life you dont get any saves at all...
