Books-Commentary - Robert A. Heinlein
Would you trust the UN with nuclear weapons as in Space Cadet?
The Patrol in Space Cadet was perceived to be a kind of executive arm for a global UN. But this UN had nuclear weapons to keep the peace. Do you think that's what Heinlein intended, and if so what do you think about the UN using nuclear weapons to impose its will?

I personally wouldn't trust the UN with a Swiss Army knife. I'm waiting for the Mother Thing to come and straighten us out...

Gotta be careful who you give a potato gun to. And remember from TMIAHM that a big rock and a deep gravity well is better than a A-bomb and not nearly so messay...no radioactive fallout or anything. I though it was funny that Robert chose to pound the A-bomb proof Cheyanne Mountain flat, in that story, using only moon rocks.

Holy sexually active bovine, Batman! We're in agreement. The world must be about to end. The concept of the International Silly Society commonly referred to the UN getting off their collective thumbs and actually doing something usefull? Not bloody likely!(BIG EVIL GRIN) The idea however of a one world government? as long as we were the government I'd support that. While our government is screwed up, it's still the best one around! A free people can ALWAYS accomplish more than a people who are enslaved by their own leaders.

In fairness, the UN could probably be trusted with a potato gun- the combination of inertia and Security Council vetoes would keep it from being fired in anger lightly. And I DID say that I would trust the UN with nuclear weapons... not very far. The problem with atom bombs is that the d@#^ things make me nervous BY THE VERY ACT OF BEING ON MY PLANET. Personally, I have a deep longing for a 'cleaned-up' UN that works for the purposes for which it was intended- one of which was to keep powerful nations in check. However, to 'clean up' the UN would require virtually infinite diplomatic capital- the sort that can only be earned by winning a major war. So it's probably not in the cards. Sigh.
