Not only do they provide Some comic relief, but Every Single Character Has a Point and Purpose. Without them the Ents wouldn't have destroyed Isengard, and Aragon, Gimli, and Legolas wouldn’t have met up with Gandalf again and gone to Rohan, and, as others have mentioned, both Feromir and Eowen would have died. Everyone had a purpose. Like Boromir, who showed the power the ring has in corrupting people, and who led to the whole thing with Denethor and Feromir.

In all logic, you're quite right. In fact, you'll read that Elrond says that his first thought was to send both hobbits back to the Shire. But the driving force of the book is the characters involved, and of course both M and P are very english-type personalities, used both as comic relief and to maintain a common-place element to the story, not to mention representing the ability of small folk to, with perserverance, triumph over the great powers of the world. What else would Tolkien do but send them along?

Are they useful? WHO CARES? Pippin, in my opinion is the best character in the books/movies! (notice name)

Merry and Pippin were usefull! Even if they didnt show it quite as much as the other characters, it wouldnt be LOTR without them!

If they had not come, for one thing, both Eowen and Faramir would have died. Also, I agree with Jay in that books are better than movies if the books came first.ps pippin is my favorite character, and it wuold not have been the same witout them. so I think they were usful. ^_^

i agree with evryone on this board. pippin is soooo funny but at times he makes you cringe. nevermind. LOTR would not be LOTR without merry and pip. END OF STORY.

I can't remember in the book, but in the movie the hobbits were more resilient to the power of the ring than the other races.

Saruman would have defeated Rohan without the help of merry & pippin. The ents sent huorns to destroy wargs and orcs. It didn't show them in the movie but the riders of rohan chased the orcs into a woods that suddenly appeared. nothing ever escaped that woods. Huorns were like ents but could not speek. they were younger and more reckless. Merry also stabbed the king of the ring wraiths in the back with his blade from westerness. He caught the wraith off guard and allowed Eowen of rohan the chance to stick him and kill him.

C'mon. Why is this question even asked? They were helpful, but I'm not going to name them for the billionth time on this post. These websites should be about the books, not the movies. Everyone should know that no movie is better than the book it is based on.

Merry and pippen were the wons who convinced the ents to go to war and destroy isengard and so if it had been 'Mighty elves' who had gone they would never have been kidnapped and Fangorn would have been bulldosed by saruman

I the Mighty SAURON would have taken over middle earth with or without the help of mary and pippin. However when I looked into the palantir I though pippin was frodo so I started running to Isengard and I pulled a hamstring. Thats the only way the fellowship could've gotten the drop on me. I was injured...and who sends a woman into battle anyway? the witch king getting killed by a girl. eowyn's gonna get it. I'm biding my time though. as soon as you guys think this story's just a story, i'mm start making my rings all over again. GO MORDOR!

Indeed, Becka, indeed... *tries to nod wisely but fails miserably*. Comedic is not a word. Just to add to my earlier post, without Merry and Pippin Sauron would have taken over Middle-Earth and killed everyone.

We are very disturbed that you would even consider the thought that we are just, as you so kindly put it, "a waste of space"! I beg your pardon but it is very rude and injusticed to be debating this topic, those of you that are looking out for us, Thank you. And to the rest of you...

If Merry and Pippin hadn't been included, the story would have lost some of its' appeal! They were the wild cards, and the comedic relief when things were getting tense. They also showed us how things change no matter how we wish they wouldn't, and how life can be an amazing adventure if we only let it! They made me laugh when they were getting into scrapes. They made me cry, especially the scene in "LOTR: The Two Towers" when Pippin is leaving with Gandalf on SHadowfax, and Merry is left behind. The comradery reminds me of my own best friend: No matter how annoying she can be, I still love her. Thus, Merry and Pippin were one of the key components in the LOTR story. Tolkien was a master of words, and a king of hearts!

The story would have ended at the beginning. They helped Sam and Frodo when they were stealing veg from the field, helped them get away from the dark riders then. If they hadn't they would have been caught and probably killed, the ring would be taken and the story wouldn't be any good.

and they all would have died terribly ever after. Nobody would've ever been taken into fangorn to awaken the ents and the hurons to what was going on. The story would've ended at helms deep.

Okay...sorry i am posting without reading whats been going on but i saw the title to this board and had to post. Merry and Pippen were definately not a waste of space. And Elrond did not send them. If you read the book people would know that.
