Soylent Yellow is right on all counts. Basically, this movie was gorilla dung. The only parts I enjoyed were at the beginning, with the space station encountering the temporal anomaly, and the station's captain receiving his own mayday from the future. I'm not entirely convinced that training chimps to fly spaceships is a smart idea, either. The movie may have had a bigger budget than the 1968 version, but it captured none of the magic. (Also, even after all these years, I still think that the girl who played Nova in the original was so hot!! Even watching it today, she's still smokin'!) This new movie was so terrible that if Mark Wahlberg would have found the Statue of Liberty at the end, the lady probably would've dropped the torch and gave him the finger.

POTA 2001 was wrong on so many levels!
The sets looked like they were built for college production of Shakespear or something. Everything seemed so fake. Even the scenes shot in the desert seemed fake. The atmosphere of the 1968 original was totally lost. In that version it seemed real! 2001 version was cartoonish. While its true this version stuck more to the original ending in the novel, it just did not have the impact of Charleton Heston pounding his fist on the beach in front of a half buried Statue of Liberty (sort of unrealistic - how is that New York was totally erased but this statue survived a nuclear blast - but nevertheless the 1968 version ending was 10 times better than 2001)
The problem with so many of todays movies - over reliance on CGI - it looks better than 10 years ago but it still looks fake. King Kong 2005 is another CGI mess - its worse than the 1976 version. They blow all their money on big name stars leaving little left for SFX. SFX modeling has become a lost art.
