Action Game
Grade B-

The boys at Valve keep cranking'm out! First there was Half Life, where you play the scientist trying to escape from the lab, then Opposing Force where you play the soldier trying to escape from the lab, and now Blue Shift... where you play the security guard trying to escape from the lab (What's next, Temp Shift, where you play a typist trying to get out)?

First the bad points: If you've played either of the first two games, you've played this game. The basic theme and even the levels are very repetitive of the first two games. What's worse, the levels are relatively sparsely populated with aliens and adversaries, at least compared to Half Life and Opposing Force. And your character never gets to pack the heavy alien weaponry that he does in the first two games. The game is also short, playable and winnable in just a few hours.

Now the good: It is Half Life. If you've been starved for first person shooters (it seems software companies have stopped making them), and it's been a while since you've played half-life, this is a good deal. The game is bundled with Opposing Force, so if you haven't played that before, it's an even better deal--I hadn't played either, and in fact I found Opposing Force to be a superior game.

The game starts off slowly, with your character marching around and making some repairs. And when the shooting starts, it's not very fast or furious. There are the usual assortment of jumping puzzles, but none that are too bad. It's a mildly diverting game. But there are no battles with super monsters, no combat with the special forces gymnastic crowd.

Graphics: The game comes with something called a "high definition pack" which is supposed to improve the graphics; I didn't notice any difference. The graphics are the same as the original game, as far as I could tell.

Interface:
Standard first person shooter; controls very responsive. No complaints.

Overall: If you haven't played an FPS in a while, and Half Life isn't fresh in your memory, this will be a pleasant diversion. But don't expect much more than that.
