TV-Commentary - Six Million Dollar Man & Bionic Woman
When Steve Austin was running 60 miles per hour, how come his legs never ripped themselves off of his torso?
Consider if you had metal legs attached to a flesh and bone body. If your legs were going sixty miles an hour, wouldn't they rip off your body? Or what if you had a metal arm that lifted something very heavy; wouldn't that cause your arm to drop right out of its socket? How come Steve never had these problems?

We have a bet going. Seem to remember in the scripts, someone implying or saying the weight of both bionics were great given the weight of the limbs? please settle this

When you drive a car 60mph, and then slam the breaks, your body doesn't fall apart. THe car just absorbs all the shock of accelaration and de-accelaration, its the same with Steve. His body was designed to absorb these traumas which were first introduced at the feet, then less as it moves toward the pelvis. In essence , the bionics were specially equipped with shock absorbers .

You are aware that this is a TV show, right? Fiction? Suspension of disbeleif? Ever hear of these things? Christ, quit trying to put things under the microscope.

It's true. A bionic anything is only as strong as the fulcrum. Ever lift a car? I tried and it was my BACK that tore itself apart. I don't think a bionic arm would've helped. Also, if you jumped off a 100 foot building onto bionic legs, at the moment of impact, those metal joints would smask right through the hips and into the abdomen. Now, that would be a very short six million dollar man. Lastly, what is the nuclear bit? Nuclear energy only works by heating up water to make steam which then drives a turbine. I never saw any steam coming out of his limbs. Maybe it was his zipper.

Well obviously they took this into account and found a way around the problem, otherwise they wouldnt have a SHOW now, would they?

Of course not! As for the arm: I've seen bodybuilders lift the end of a car, though for an instant, without having their arms fall to the ground. As for the legs: guys, guys, guys, come on! I nicked 70 mph myself the other day on my daily jog and my legs are still in place... :)

As long as the connections to his leg stump bones were solid then there would be no problem. The robot legs simply carry the bag of flesh along for the ride. Now if he were running 600 mph then there might be huge bloody mess, sort of like riding a motorcycle going 600 mph. Now as far as lifting cars and such with a bionic arm. I suspect that Steves spine would collapse since the entire weight would transfer to his spine. The arm could snap off too. Usually Steve just lifted objects that a normal weight lifter could manage like fence poles with 100 pound concrete bases. The real question is what would happen if the bionic man gave the bionic woman some HEAD, could she accidentally crush his skull between her legs during an orgazm? Or crush his pelvis doing MISSIONARY position?

In order for the show to work you would have to forget things like this. It is science fiction, after all.
