What a dopey show!
What a dopey show! Get some rejects from Beverly Hills 90210 and send the teens into space to fight the enemy. Why can't they have shows where ADULTS are the soldiers? Typically, like most contemporary science fiction, the girl in charge is tough and butch while the guys are all sensitive. And ALL of them, especially the Chinese guy, are INCREDIBLY whiney!
The irony is that it could have been a good series if they had had Apollo and Starbuck like characters instead of these whiney teens. Every episode involved a government conspiracy against them and a lot of whining, as well as a lot of anal military stiffness.
The only good episode was the one where Wang Paul was captured and interrogated by the robot with the torture finger. I'm glad the series was quickly canceled, I don't think I could've watched seven seasons of the whining teens eating sugar packets with their fingers.

Oh yeah, Space:Above and Beyond is out on DVD. I mean I looked over the entire show and really if you can get past the fact that they are pilots when none of them have had a college course and they are all officers at about age twenty (like that would ever happen}it ain't too bad. The only thing I wanted to see was a spinoff about the Angry Angels or a show starring the AIs. That brunette AI was relly hot.

The way they killed off nearly entire cast in the end was a bit over the top...
It was kind of like the Marines in ALIENS. Had potential but just never caught on. Had they used hard core tough as nails characters like those it might have succeeded. Instead they went with the pretty boys and girls trying to immitate 90210 in space.

I thought it was a pretty good show. Of course I'm an epic space adventure nut. My favorite episodes were the one with CHIGGY VON RICHTOVEN, the alien ace, and the one where they took the Chig bomber and attacked one of their worlds. It's a shame it was cancelled. If any of you want a good SF read, then try THUNDER IN SPACE by BJ Bennett. It's also about a war between humanity and an alien menace and it's got all the space fighter dogfights and space marine surface battles you could want. Check out the review on this site. By the way, any one know if Space Above and Beyond is or will be out on DVD?
