If Chakotay were a real Indian, wouldn't he have scalped Captain Janeway by now?
Chakotay is supposed to be an American Indian on the show, and yet we haven't seen him do anything Indian-ish in a long time. In the first season he was going on visionquests, talking to his animal guides, and fingering his tattoo. Now he does none of those things, just sitting around like Riker on tranquilizers. When they were trapped on the volcano planet in "Basics Part II", Chakotay couldn't start a fire or use a bow and arrow. If he were a real Indian, don't you think he could've built a teepee, or done a rain dance, or planted some corn, or something? How come he never even puts on war paint when they go to red alert? At this point, how is he any different from Riker, minus the beard?

This question is too funny. The reason he couldn't do things "Indians" do is that he is from a tribe of "Casino Indians". They scalp differently. Snake-Eyes....you lose. Now, if he were to encounter a crew of Ferengi...
you'd see his native skills clearly demonstrated.
As for that tatoo, he got drunk on shoreleave and woke up with it. Too embarassed to tell anyone what happened, he claimed it was "native decoration" and everybody bought it.

chaokatoy chose to leave his tribe when he was 16 and even befor that he didnt want to be in it so he never leanrned stuff like that
plus not all tribes are scapling tribes

I thought it was great having a native american charecter in star trek chakotay's spiritualality helped his ship and crew, and he is my favorite charecter mmm that tattoo of his.
And i agreee there is nothing wrong with native americans i have quiet a few native american friends in msn that i talk to and two of them my friends helped me through a hard time. Their nice cause they live in peace with the land and have a connection to all living things.
