TV-Commentary - Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Best Episode
Here's the first runnerup:

The episode where Captain Crane had to learn the secret code that was in the form of the song, "Fa-la la-la, la-la-la la-la-la,", and everyone who tried to sing it to him would get murdered or beaten up.

But the very best episode was the one where the entire crew (except for Captain Crane) was duplicated and replaced by INTELLIGENT WAXWORK DUMMIES. When Crane came aboard, he NEVER NOTICED that the entire crew had glazed faces and spoke in slow monotones! Of all the episodes involving the crew becoming controlled by aliens (and there were many), this was the most hysterical. Unfortunately, this episode made us laugh at the show, and not with it.

the episode you cite where Crane has to learn that song took place in Venice. Oddly years later when I visited the real Venice I was surprised how much that episode captured the look of the city...right down to the police officer. The music score for that episode was done..(if I recall correctly) by Nelson Riddle..later famous for his Batman cues.

1. "Escape From Venice" 2. "The Wax Men" I'd add "Time Bomb" (Where Nelson was trying to infiltrate a research complex on the Black Sea, and Crane had to stop him because he'd been injected with an isotope that could have caused the reactor ther to go into meltdown). Remember the sniper rifle disguised as a camera (Crane), and the poison dart gun disguised as a pocketwatch (Nelson)? This was the closest VTTBOTS ever got to "Man From U.N.C.L.E." territory. Generally, I thought they did espionage-type stories better than "Sci-Fi" type ones, although at times the show somewhat reminded me of the Jon Pertwee era of Dr. Who, with the Seaview crew in UNIT's role'.

I also have loved the series for 40 years! My favorite episode is "Doomsday"...in fact, all the first season episodes are fabulous
