Best Episodes: The Invasion of Time
The Doctor returns to Gallify to claim the Presidency. With the death of Chancellor Goth, he was the only candidate left standing, so to speak. The Time Lords are stunned by his behavior but agree.
In reality, however, the Doctor is working for the Vardans, shimmering tin foil aliens who can read minds and who want to take over Gallifry. The Doctor is playing along with them to find out who the Vardans work for. He's keeping Leela in the dark because she's too dumb to hide her true thoughts like the Doctor is.
The Doctor only reveals his plan to Cardinal Borusa after he gets a lead-lined office where the Vardans can't read his thoughts. After he opens a hole in the energy shield, they find out who's truly behind things--the Sontarans.
The Doctor plays hide-and-seek in the many levels of his tardis, buying time so he can construct a d-mat gun to kill the sontarans. Then he zaps their leader and loses his memory of the entire episode. It's unclear why he needed the d-mat gun and why regular lasers wouldn't have worked, but hey, he saved Gallifry, so we can't quibble with how he did it.

Is this a joke?! the invasion of time is an episode that returns the sontarans int the Dr. Who universe but this is no good thing,they march around the tardis looking and dont do anything noticable. The vardans look like they get their clothes from the land of tinsel, they come and say they rule. Sounds entertaining? thats right. NO. The sontarans worst episode. If you are looking for a top quality Sontaran episode go for their debeut Time Warrior, which introduces also Sarah Jane Smith.

This episode is the worst of the season and a general stinker. The Vardans are so embarassing it's untrue, the Sonatarans underused, Gallifrey has becomne boring and bland, the chase sequnece around the TARDIS is one of the great missed opportunies of the series and Leela's leaving scene is shameful.
