Who are the Cybermen?
The Cybermen were descended from a race of being who gradually replaced parts of their bodies with bionic parts. Then, they replaced the final part of their bodies, their brains, with metal parts too (ok, this part is hard to believe, but I'm just telling their story).
Being made of metal, the Cybermen are very strong. Having computers for brains, they're very logical. And the logical thing for them to do was... conquer the galaxy. The Doctor fought them on Mondas, and Telos, and a bunch of other places. Lasers can't stop them, but putting gold dust in their chest units suffocate them (using the glitter gun). It's unclear if they're robots why they need to breathe.
Their leader is called the Cybercontroller, an especially fat cyberman the Doctor destroyed twice. They also have pets called cybermats, who inject people with poison.

I would like to correct you, Astaroth. Mondas was featured in "The Tenth Planet" but both the Doctor and his companions (Ben and Polly) spent the entire story at the South Pole. As a matter of fact, the Doctor was virtually unseen in episode three because retiring actor William Hartnell was ill. The Doctor knows of the existence of Mondas prior to the story, but in no story does he actually go there nor does he claim to have been there in the past.

Just want to make something clear. The Doctor went to Mondas in the 'Tenth Planet' which was the episode with the really fat orignal cybermen.
