she is a person like any other person!
people who keep bringing up the "race" issue just want this past problem to perpetuate.
stop making color an issue and we can all heal an go foward. we all purchase cars of color.... clothing of color.... foods of color.... housing of color.... we can talk about all these things and more and color is not an issue.
Color should not be a bad thing to talk about anymore. people are people are people.

A real world answer is that the character is intended to be from another universe and another culture. It makes it easier to have a believable person from another culture if he/she looks somewhat "exotic"...
A plot line answer is that the planet most of the Stargates seem to be on include cultures that wear clothes, trade for outside food, and don't have as much sun/UV exposure as Equatorial Africa.
Dark skin is an adaptaion to large quantities of sunlight exposure that would otherwise rob the body of folates, needed in reproduction. This is moth mitigated and reinforced by mate selection (whether darker skin is attractive or not and whether it is healthier or not). It tends to be reduced by decreased sunlight (either by climate or by using clothes as protection) and by increased chances for Rickets if vitamin D is not added to the diet.
Over long periods of time, people gradually lighten if they don't supplement vitamin D, don't choose darker mates, and/or wear clothes...
Now, if they showed us a planet in Pegasus that had a climate similar to Equatorial Africa and the people wore no clothes...
...I would sorely be disappointed if they weren't all black...

Hey, why doesn't this chick have a boyfriend? Is she gay or bi?

The only thing that matters is that Teyla has a nice rack and tight snatch and every guy on Team Atlantis wants to bump uglies with her, except maybe McKay since hes probably gay. Even most of the women probably want a crack at her too. All they need to do is sent Seven of Nines (StarTrek: Voyager) catsuit resized to fit Telya then put here in some six inch spiked heels and let the sparks fly.

I think what they are trying to do without too much of a shock to those that think that the white man is the creator of everything, that the true decendents of atlantis are black people with blonde hair. Did you see the Disney cartoon? They were all very dark with white hair. But personaly, i think the true chilren of atlantis would be native americans of central/south americans. The Olmec statues found in Mexico portray africa explore kings.

It's like Richard Pryor observed in 1980: "I saw Star Wars the other day. You know what,...there aint no black people in that entire universe...there ain't no black people in any sci fi...ya'll don't expect us to be around in the future, do ya?" and it's not that black people don't want to act in sci fi...it's that Samuel L. Jackson gets all the black roles.
Besides, who cares...thhere ain't no CLOWNS on Stargate either.

I think your looking too far into this, to a true non racist colour would not be relevant. But your right there should be, why are black peolpe not interested in acting in sci fi??

Why not check out her background before assuming? Why should she black? They cast people based on looks, acting ability, the ability to fit the part, etc, blah blah blah. She fit it best so she was in.
She was born in Tanzania, her mother is from Lusotho, Tanzania and her father is a British citizen who had settled in Lousiana. They moved to Canada when she was 5 and she is both a Canadian and a Tanzanian citizen.

Teyla is no black or mulata (mix). She is hispanic. So obvious. Even when she had to do as if she talked in an allien language her spanish accent was very notable.

I have to disagree with you on this. Yea, Teyla is light-skinned, but who cares. Are you saying that black women who are light-skinned should not be cast because they do not look resemble the "typical" black woman? She's gorgeous and I'd die to look like her. Plus, she's a strong, kick-ass female. While I do agree with you that there aren't realistic propertions between the races, I urge you to look at other shows. I am not trying to justify it, but other shows do it too, and I'll agree that this should be worked on.
ackson creations? What is it with black women and scifi anyway--Jessica Alba as the lightskinned blonde in Fantastic Four, Halle Berrie as the lightkinned blonde in X Men--what's wrong, was Whoopi Goldberg unavailable? Why can't we have black people who look like black people? Do you think a letter writing campaign would help?
As for Jessica Alba: I may be wrong, but I think she's actually more latino.
