Palpatine really suffers only from the typical villain foibles of arrogance and overconfidence. The Sith had been planning for the takeover for over a thousand years. Now that Palpatine had finally accomplished it and he got a little complacent. Under normal circumstances he might have actually forseen the Star Destroyer thing. But He's a smug arrogant SOB and was too wrapped up in gloating and then torturing Luke he dropped his guard. He was too bust channeling his Force abilities into lightning to think of probing the future for possibilities.

Maybe, maybe not. It all depends on your viewpoint! Of course to us, he seems like a psychopath. That's because we aren't completely evil. It is true, in DARK EMPIRE the Emperor shows off his clones. Maybe he saw the future, or maybe he was just planning in case something happened. "Always in motion is the future," and how many people can flawlessly predict their own future? A megalomaniac like the Emperor is clearly insane, but mentally retarded? Depends on how you look at it.

Ok, look. The emporor can forsee the future. BUT it is also stated that "Always in motion the futureis" split second decisions can alter the time line. I mean I bet he didnt forsee Vader picking up his sorry ass and tossing doen the death Star reactor core.

I have this one read. Palpatine did plan this all. In fact if you read about Dark Empire, it shows that Palpatine ACTUALLy planned it all. First and foremost Palpatine actually had this set up and he made a younger clone of himself just in case he lost. In fact I guess you should really read the Dark Empire series which talks about the newly resurrected Emperor Palpatine in a younger body which almost looks like Anakin Skywalker.

It's hard to see your own future. Yoda mentions stuff along those lines in Empire Strikes Back. Whenever the future affects yourself, clouded it becomes. Then again, if I knew when I was gonna die, I'd know that it wasn't my time and wouldn't worry about fearing death, so the spaceship crash, melting, etc... It was all meaningless.
