TV-Commentary - Deep Space Nine
Should Avery Brooks have been replaced?
...yes! There was some talk of replacing him in the earlier seasons because his character was seen as too lethargic and uninspiring. Indeed, Sisco didn't talk very much in the first season or two and whatever he said wasn't very memorable. Actually, it wasn't what he said but how he said it. He didn't have the regal splendor of Picard or the grand inflections of Kirk or even the humorous irony of Captain Janeway.

They tried to beef up his character by changing his appearance. They added a beard, and when that didn't work, they shaved off his head. They also tried to give him more dramatic lines to let him display emotion, but Data from the Next Generation displayed more genuine emotion than he did. Wouldn't the show have been better off if he had been replaced?

I never got into DS9. I thought the concept was interesting. Instead of exploring the galaxy and meeting new people, let's show how we interact with them once we've found them. But I think it fell flat. Instead of showing the dozens of races it might have, it featured a handful. Instead of portraying the Federation as a benevolent parental figure struggling with the nuances of other races, it showed us constantly being threatened by everyone. I always thought of DS9 as a "Soap Opera in Space". They tried to liven it up with malfunctioning Cardassian equipment. By bringing in TNG people. By putting the Trek back in with the Defiant. But instead of improving the show, that just highlighted its flaws. Instead of improving the show, they kept adding more props in a vain attempt to keep it from collapse. Avery Brooks didn't need to be replaced. The entire concept needed to be redone. Or maybe undone. They forgot that Star Trek isn't about how we get along with ourselves. It's about how we interact with others.

Y'all may not have military experience. Avery Brooks was a VERY believable commanding officer. Janeway was no Captain. I served as a Flight Engineer on C-5 Galaxies (yes, a Galaxy-class vessel, sigh). Real 'ship' commanders are like Picard or Sisko - not at all like Kirk or Janeway. I include the several very excellent female Aircraft Commanders I was privileged to fly with.

while it is certainly true that an actor must bring his own personality and projection to what ever lines he is handed, but...daaa...is still daaa, no matter who is saying it. sorry, but the week to week concepts of the series must be laid at the feet of the writers, not the actors. i don't recall anyone getting an emmy from deep space 9. you watched the program (and still do) because you liked it, not because it was modern shakespear. don't know who wrote the brooks critique, but the changes should have been made to the while not its pieces.

In life you evolve, you grow, you transend your surroundings. And that is what Avery Brooks did in DS9. He started out as a bereaved father who just lost the love of his life. Trying to do the best he can to raise his son the best way he could. However, he overcame his grief, and showed great strength, love and nobility for his crew, his father, and mostly his crew, which he allowed to make decisions and grow into leaders themselves, which is something that Picard or Janeway never did. He pull together so diverse personalities and lead them on a common goal, and he earned the respect of everyone around him. Chief O'Brien who actually worked with Captain Picard, called Captain Sisko, “Star Fleet's Best Captain”. Enough Said.
