She didn't give much of an explanation. But her father gave a cryptic explanation when he said that Carter loved someone else but was "afraid to break the rules". What could he have been talking about? Now, if Major Carter was a lesbian, in love with say, Janet, then under the military's don't ask don't tell policy revealing her love would have broken the rules. We know it's not General O'Neill she's in love with because the Guaold made him impotent back in Season 7. Given Carter's very short hair and closeness to Janet, isn't it likely that she called off the wedding because she's a lezzie? Not only is Carter gay but that guy she was engaged to was WAY too nice and WAY too normal for her.
