Was the show canceled because Wilma turned brunette?
Buck Rogers was canceled early into the second season; not coincidentally, the second season was also when Wilma became a brunette. Coincidence? I don't think so.
Other lousy features of the second season:
1) They introduced Admiral Asimov, a fat, blubbering guy who looked more like a waitor than an admiral.
2) They introduced the senile Dr. Goodfellow, who was annoying, dull, and very slow.
3) They introduced the pompous robot Creighton, who was (yes) pompous.
4) The series stopped having a sense of humor, and most plots revolved around fables and fantasy plotlines that were never fully explained.
5) They took Wilma out of her vinyl outfit and put her in loose fitting sailor outfits.
...so why would anyone watch?

i think the problem with the second season was that they changed too much. where was ardala and the draconians? i couldn't stand hawk or assimov either, and what the heck happened to twikki's voice? also, the searcher had to be the single ugliest star ship in all sci fi history. i think if there had been a third season, or even a second half of the second season they should have returned to earth. take care.

I haven't seen this show in years so my memory is a little foggy on it although I do remember enjoying it. The Pilot was released as a theatrical film about six-months before the series went on air. I agree that the first season was better than the second. Erin Grey is actually dark-haired and maybe she got tired of being a bleach blond, although she wasn't/isn't a bimbo like most of them. And getting rid of Dr. Huer was also a bad idea, I liked him more than Asimov and Goodfellow.

i liked her better as a brunette. i must be the one guy in the universe who isn't crazy about blondes. no offense to you ladies with goldilocks.
i don't think there was ever any attempt to make buck rogers serious science fiction, it was supposed to be silly and fun like the old saturday morning movie serials, but it just got ridiculous when they brought hawk onboard. they also put wilma in that silly dairy queen waitress outfit instead of those tight spandex jobs and they got rid of ardala. the special effects also got much cheaper, and the use of all the old props from galactica didn't help matters.

Thr points stated here are very good as to why the second season sucked so much and got cancelled. The fact that Wilma changing her hair color had little to do with it, but taking her out of those sexy, sliky body suits really helped to bring down that show, that and horrible writting!!
