Which Kane was better?
Kane was played by two actors--Henry Silva and Michael Ansara. The Henry Silva Kane was the one in the pilot, a lean, mean looking dark haired guy who looked like a drug kingpin. The Michael Ansara Kane was also dark haired but had a bit of a belly and a moustache. He also played "Kang" in the original Star Trek series, and played Kane after the pilot.
So which was better? By far the Henry Silva Kane. The Henry Silva Kane looked tougher, and more aggressive. The Michael Ansara Kane looked more laid back, less concerned about things, more meekly obedient to Princess Ardala.

After re-watching both Kanes in action, I have to agree that Henry Silva's Kane was more proactive, and he challenged Ardala's authority several times. One got the sense that he had more power during that time, though Silva portrayed the character in a sort of flat John Saxon-kind of way which made me write him off at first.
Other people have noted that Ansara played Kane just like Kang from Star Trek. Simply change one letter. My impression is that while his role had changed to make him more subservient to Ardala, he had that air of supreme confidence in himself. One could also tell that he secretly chafed under Ardala's impetuousness - when Buck pointed this out Kane replied that he would wait until Buck's inevitable execution, and then presumably make his own power grab.
When Tigerman held Ardala in a headlock so that Buck could go free, Kane casually told the princess what her choices were. He seemed to show signs of cruel glee, and did not move to try to free her. So yes, Kane did follow her orders in general, but he was always scheming in the background.
