Best Episode: War Games
This episode had the most space battles of any Space: 1999 episodes. Eagles were blasting Hawks, ground turrets were being blasted from orbit, giant battleships were being blasted by Eagles, and more. Unfortunately, it all turned out to be a dream sequence. How conveeen-ient.
The other great scene: when Helena gets captured by the aliens and put into a transparent box. That's the perfect place for her. She acts wooden in this episode, either because she gets taken over by the aliens or because of her natural acting ability (it's hard to tell which).

The series that preceded Space: 1999, UFO a few years earlier, had battles between Interceptors and UFOs, though they largely consisted of the Interceptors firing a single large torpedo randomly into the flight path and usually not hitting anything. There was the SkyDiver sub launched aircraft that did shoot down a UFO in a dogfight. And Im sure other series had a few examples as well. That said Wargames had a much better battle scene than most other series and developed a plot device that was revolutionary at the time - "The Reset Button" where all the devastation that occurs is undone. I remembered how shocked I was when everyone ended up dead. I was like- Huh? Is the series cancelled? Then we found out it was all an illusion planted by the aliens to convince them not to land on their planet and keep on moving. One heck of a twist ending, I dont recall another series doing that before 1999 did it.

Would some person know if the Space 1999 episode War Games showed the first ever space dog fight? Between the Eagles and Hawks? Maybe first sci-fi television space dog firght? The episode first aired in 1975 which is 2 years before Star Wars.
Thank you for your time...

Season 2 had a decent start with the Metamorph and the Exiles, but then a string of poor episodes (Brian, Taybor, Glisters) sunk the project. Towards the end we start to get better episodes (BOW, Seance Spectre, etc) but the damage was too much to be corrected. For an "action" series it lacks space battles and most of the "action" was nothing but fist fights. They've should built the Hawks and should spread the Hawks build story as a secondary plot in 3 or 4 episodes. A main story and then references to this new project.

Yes indeed, Season 2 could have been great but that Star Trek guy took over and turned it into something awful - the cheesy 70s electronic synthesizer music was grating. The look and feel was ruined, moving from the spacious Main Mission to the cramped claustrophobic Command Center.
It wasnt all bad, there were a few good points here and there but overall it was a disaster.
They should have turned their attention towards building Hawks and large spacehips that could be used to evacuate Alpha (the way those on Ultima Thule built) and go where they pleased while leaving behind anyone who did not want to risk it and wanted to remain to run Alpha, have children and repopulate the base and expand. They could have had episodes based on both groups of Alphans, those planning to leave and those staying behind furing Season 2 and starting in Season 3 or 4 those leaving Alpha would begin their own journey.
Basically Season 2 failed because it was just too cheesy and silly. The Taybor, Rules of Luton and New Adam New Eve was too much like 60s Star Trek episodes.
There were a few good episodes like Immunity Syndrome and Journey to Where but they were to few to even matter.
They did bring back Battlestar Galactica which will run longer than the original. Maybe Space: 1999 will be redone as Space: 2099, updating the technology a bit and redoing best 1/2 of the original episodes while retaining the look and feel of the original. Maybe adding Hawks to the fleet right from the start with several good space battles. Redoing Wargames and Dragons Domain (which I think was responsible for the successful ALIEN series of movies) with modern effects could be very impressive if done right.
Doubt it will actually happen, but anythings possible.

I agree with Annika on this.
The aliens were the antithesis of what Alpha were, mainly on the emotional departement. Remember they said Alphans were a plague of fear and they would ruin a balanced society.

I thought Anthony Valentine and Isla Blair were supposed to be 'wooden' and 'lacking in emotion'. That was the whole point of the episode. These beings on this planet were the antithesis of what Alpha and the Alphans were. Emotional. Flawed. War like. The warning the aliens put out was 'come here at your own risk' and the whole element of the unemotionality was supposed to be there. It wasn't bad acting, it was very good acting. To be unemotional and devoid of feeling. The essence of the planet was that all feeling had been stripped and only intellectual thought prevailed.

If they wanted to shift into an action series in Season 2, they could have used War Games as a template. Instead of those poor episodes we should have seen huge battles with Eagles, the tanks (Infernal Machine) and the laser turrets around the base.

This is one of my favorite episodes. Saw it originally when I was 7 or 8. I was absolutely mortified as a child. Alpha was practically demolished and several main characters get killed. You never see something like that on most shows. I was too young to realize it was merely a dream or warning and I was in shock for weeks.
