Best Episode: Dragon's Domain
When I first saw this episode I was 9 years old and found it very, very scary; even today, it's one of the more alarming "nightmare monster" episodes ever to appear on Space: 1999.
In a nutshell, a scientific expedition led by an astronaut with a bad Italian accent encounters a graveyard of ships docked together. When they dock with the ships, a giant screeching tentacle monster comes aboard, and hypnotizes the crew, one by one, to walk into it's maw where it chews them up and spits them out half eaten and covered with slime.
Only the guy with the bad Italian accent escapes, and goes back to live on the moon. Flashing forward to the present, the moon encounters this same spaceship graveyard, and the guy with the bad Italian accent goes for round two with the alien. The fearsome monster is so powerful that lasers have no effect on it.... so they have to hack it with an ax.
Ok, so that's a bit anti-climactic. But it was still very much an episode rooted with tension and excitement.

Even Horizon is not only a good film, but one of Sam Neill's top performances. Heavy influenced by Cliver Barker it could have been made as a S1999 episode easely, since the dark tone remindes me Force of Life or Troubled Spirit or even DD. Paul W.S. Anderson is a good director, no matter what people say. The problem in his other films is the script, not the direction.

Dragon Domain reminds me of Aliens but also Event Horizon from a few years back with Sam Neil. Certinly one of the best 1st year episodes, the atmosphere of supernatural space horror was well done. With one or two exceptions the Special Effects were excellent and they shame some computer generated stuff pumped out these days. Black sun and war games are still good in their own way. I thought Tony Cellini accent actually added a more interesting quality and it wasn't overdone, some Italians really do speak like that, I work with one or two. I can't believe they release this episode for kids to see, I was 7 years old when I first saw it and it gave me nightmares.

I think it was the real inspiration behind the successful ALIEN movie series. Every time I see ALIEN I think of Dragons Domain.
Watch it on DVD every so often. If they ever redo Space: 1999 this episode is one that should be included along with War Games.

Thanks for this thread... Memories of this epsiode came flooding back just a few weeks ago and I discovered the name by stumbling my way here.
Got the Set 4 DVDs and just watched Dragon's Domain last night for the first time in 20 years. Rare to get a glimpse into one's subconcious; I now realize where all of the terrible "eaten alive" nightmares I've had over the years come from.
I guess the reasons it made such an impression stem partly from what the monster looked like and partly from what it was doing... but mostly from the fact there's never an explanation for its behavior or why it exists at all.
Creepy, creepy, CREEPY!!!

it was probably the best written and scariest but the foam in 'space brain' scared me even more because of its corniness and the multi-colour whirligig thing was also odd.
