I remember reading a SF novel or story in the 60's set in a future, underground city. The protagagonist lives in an automated apartment that malfunctions: he has to argue with his fron door when he goes out and his automated meals are always at an inappropriate time (breakfast instead of dinner etc). Can anybody identify the story for me?

Just leaving this message to say few other books have blown my mind in such a strong way as The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. God, that was a ride! Long live Philip K. Dick.

counterfeit vs. authentic? sounds like you have a cool teacher who assigned a PKD book that you haven't read. read the darn book. it's a good book. not as good as some of his books that didn't win awards but nevermind. the guy who sells used trinkets & stuff--the main character basically--is a good place to start looking.

       posts on 4/25/2006 10:18:05 PM

Does anyone know examples in the book Man in High castle where the theme counterfeit vs authentic is demonstrated

The Hanging Stranger appeared in Science Fiction Adventures, December 1953 Geeez... there's a body hanging outside from a pole. Doesn't anyone care? Am I the only one who cares? Should I care? Ooops... its a mistake to care!

Other readers and TV viewers may have made this connection too. The 1995 TV series "Slidders" owes a lot of premise to Eye in the Sky. The changing universes that shift between the minds of people caught in the accidental breakdown of a high energy particle accelerator is very much like the TV premise of moving to alternate Earths.

hi. thanks for the interesting notes and info on pkd stories from the past. lets face it, if its some facts from the fifties, its in the past all right. i hope the estate of pkd eventually markets a dvd about this great author. i mean of course his relatives...and if they are reading this, please let us know about it, or how we can get it.

Shell Game appeared in Galaxy, September 1954 Well, of course, I'm not paranoid; but I know you are and here's how we are going to determine who is and who isn't?

Upon The Dull Earth appeared in Beyond Fantasy Fiction, November, 1954 When the spirits take your fiance, let her go or you may regret what happens upon her return.

Psi-man Heal My Child (aka Outside Consultant)appeared in Imaginative Tales, November 1955 It could be the end of the world as we know it when alternate medicine becomes more effective and trustworthy as a means of treatment versus conventional medicine.

Second Variety appeared in Space Science Fiction, May 1953 used in a movie, "Screamers" Humans versus robots that learned to build and modify themselves after they were first developed by humans.

The Last Of The Masters (aka Protection Agency) appeared in Orbit Science Fiction, Nov-Dec 1954 When getting rid of high tech mayhem becomes a way of life for some people. [PKDick said in 1978: "Now I show trust of robot as leader, a robot who is the suffering servant, which is to say a form of Christ. Leader as servant of man: leader who should be dispensed with -- perhaps. An ambibuity hangs over the morality of this story. Should we have a leader or should we think for ourselves? Obviously, the latter, in principle. But -- somethinmes there lies a gulf between what is theoretically right and that which is practical. It's interesting that I would trust a robot and not an android. Perhaps it's because a robot does not try to deceive you as to what it is."]

Sales Pitch appeared in Future, June 1954 Fed up with advertising and want to get away? Well, maybe in another solar system there will be some relief, maybe. [PKDick said in 1978 that he didn't like the ending either.]
