The Schizoid Man--Best Episode
The new #2 brainwashes #6 into thinking he's "#12", and gets a lookalike to play #6, and tries to get the real #6 to help convince the fake #6 that he's not the real #6, but does so in a way to show the real #6 that he's not really himself, all in an effort to break #6.
Analysis:
1) I have to say I like the very intricate plot, and despite the fact that it was complicated, I understood everything that went on. It was spooky watching everyone call #6 #12; everyone in the Village is controlled! And I enjoyed watching the fake #6's smugness as he got the best of the real #6 in their initial competitions.
2) It was also spooky watching #6 get shock treatment to convince himself to be left handed. I thought the business of his putting a finger in the socket to cure himself was a bit too pat (and very dangerous!).
3) While #6 was shocking himself, and fighting with the duplicate, why wasn't he being watched closely?
4) How did they get #6 to forget the shock sessions they gave him?

The best episode can't be "Schizoid Man" because it's not the best role that Jane Merrow played with McGoohan--that would be Juana in "A Date with Doris' from DANGER MAN. So, the best episode is..."Free For All." Just the right amount of haunting slogans (6 for 2! Obey me and be free!); the bizarre journalist doubles; many rides on the Mini Moke; the Truth Test; the assistant "who won't go away, and she doesn't even speak English!"; the marching band and the Villagers waving placards; the motto I live my life by (Number 6: "Far be it from me to carp"); and the great ending with the Rover cave. There are those who say that this episode does not provide every civilized amenity...and they are wrong!
