r2-d2 wasn't biult to talk in english, he was boiult to talk to a computer and interface through computers and not need to talk in english. r2 was an unusual droid in that most just had to obey commands and make things apear on screens. there was no need for english.

Basic R2 Astromechs don't come with the proper "Speakers" to communicate in anything but Binary "Beeps".

If memory serves me, R2D2 and C3PO were they only characters to appear in all six movies, with the exception of Obi Wan. At the end of one episode, 3PO's memory banks were erased so this means that R2 and Ben were the only characters to have almost perfect information through all movies (meaning they knew almost everything we knew). If R2 knew how to speak then it would have complicated the plot, i.e. he potentially could have told Luke that Vader is your father, Leia is your sister, that little green guy razzin you here on Dagobah is really Yoda, etc. etc. etc.

Concerning my last post on the armor thread, I think I'll read the heading before adding my comments again.

R2D2 couldn't speak English cos they didn't have the Droid Language Pack v2.1 installed. Tattoonie farmers couldn't afford the $300 licensing fee.

Astromechs were designed to sit in the back of ships and help the pilor out. why dose it matter if they speek english they are outside the pilot cant here them. the only way he knows that they want is they are hooked up to the ship and he gets words comming onto his little screen.

Why would Artoo even need to speak any other language. He obviously was the pant wearer between him and Threepio, I'm sure if we could understand him most of his sentences would start off like, "Hey Threepio, translate this for me, biotch...." I mean if i had a best friend that i could push around and that was fluent in more than 6 million forms of communication then I'd surely make him do all the talking. Wouldnt you?

Don't forget guys that his internal speaker much like older cell phone speakers could only handle certain sounds such as beeps and the R2 units primary uses did not make it worth installing the higher grade speaker and components to drive the speaker. Brad

They probably didnt design Astromechs to talk because they werent meant for regular conversation. They were generally meant to do jobs people cant, not be their buddies and hang out. Beisdes, if you took away his beeping Artoo wouldnt be as cute anymore. Theres PLENTY of living creatures and protocol droids to handle all the exposition the movie requires. And Artoo can still convey fear, annoyance, sadness or whatever else he's feeling quite well without words. If he wasnt beeping, he wouldnt feel right.

i always figured that none of the beings on star wars, including the humans, spoke english. how could they since they never went to earth or even knew it existed. just because the actors spoke english doesn't mean they were supposed to be speaking it in the movie. does that make any sense? still, it does seem strange not to give r2 a voice. what would he have sounded like? jerry lewis, maybe? "hey, nice robot ladieeeee! take care.

Well look at it like this..
The Universe is so HUGE it's endless
On the Galactic scale of things
it would'nt matter if it was
Andromeda which is something like
One hundred million LIGHT years from the earth.
It is STILL just around the corner
So if the BIG BANG idea is correct
And all the Matter in the universe
was once one Gigantic Mass that Exploded Then whats to say that
a part of that matter that is US
is not a part of THEM?
And Not all of the "Beings" in Star Wars speaks english.

How hard would it be in a galxy far, far away, with novel technological breakthroughs to put in a speech chip for communication with HUMANS! Unless, humans didn't regularly interface with ASTROMECHS, reuslting in cost--cutting in the speech chip department, not to mentiuon the style department, and passing the savings on to you!

1 Artoo was not a BATTLE DROID he was an ASTROMECH DROID
2 He oculd understand Basic{same thing as english} well enough because of the time he spent around humans. The case was also vice versa, which is why luke understood him.
3 Binary codeis faster and is also more useful when dealing with computers. He never NEEDED to speak basic.
4 Yea lucas's boys should be defending their work on a serious site instead of the junky freakin #@$%

He did not need to speak english, but he can speak english!
Well, in the space craft, he communicates via the monitor, so if they hooked him up to a speech synthesizer, I'm sure that words would come out (& we pray to Buddha that the speech synth is better than the droney Stephen Hawking variety).
R2 D2 can speak and understand english, for want of a "mouth".
R2D2 was built as a battle droid, to be usefull to fighter pilots in battles! R2 needed to speak binary, to communicate through the ships computers.
Why would they bother giving R2 a mouth? did you see him in any of the films? he hooks up to any, & from what I saw in the films, he hooks up to any of the computers & sources out information, he re-orders the computers making them open doors.
R2D2 super computer, MSWindows? puh forget it, I want an R2 unit,,,,,, "R2" could you please record Star Trek at 6, oh and can you edit the pics so that we can see Dianna Troys boobs & can you set the central heating to come on, and play the hologram thing, & help me "tween" I want to create some animation.

Would "artoo detoo" really be the same without his beeping noises? He'd just be a little metal human if he could talk. ITHORIANS ROCK!
