TV-Commentary - Star Wars Why didn't the Rebels evacuate Yavin IV as a precaution? When the Death Star was approaching, why didn't the rebels evacuate their Yavin base while simultaneously sending up their fighters to attack? I mean, maybe they couldn't have taken all their heavy equipment, but they had a few hours to pack up and leave? Were they that attached to their little golf carts that they couldn't bear the thought of leaving them behind? Or were they that confident that Porkins et.al. could destroy the Death Star? Vader or Tarkin didn't really know if Yavin-IV was THE headquarters of the rebellion. What made this base historical was the lead by Luke to an unprecedented victory over the imperial pride, the Death Star. It seems to me that Yavin-IV was a small outpost rather than a big base as seen in ESB.
