Miles O'Brien: Barefoot and Chained to the Replicator
Consider the relationship between Chief O'Brien and his dour wife, Keiko. Chief O'Brien is always wimpering and apologizing for slights, real and imaginary, and prostrating himself in an effort to win Keiko's approval. Keiko, for her part, treats O'Brien just a half-step better than a disobedient dog, and makes all the decisions for the family. She wants to go to Bajor for several months and take Molly with her? She goes. She wants Miles to rub Major Kira's back? He does.
Chief O'Brien is symbolic of the spineless, hen-pecked husband "kinder and gentler" husband of the 24th century. And yet the Chief seems perfectly content with his situation. What Star Trek is saying here is that in the future that women will be in charge and men will learn to like it.

That was a very insightful post! I'd never actually viewed their relationship that way, but I can't argue that you've got a point. She does seem to have him wrapped around her finger, and seems to get the better end of the deal in most instances.
But I don't think Star Trek is making any such message about men of the future. Not every relationship on the station is portrayed that way. They're trying to show a relationship that people have shared in the past, and doubtless will share in the future. Just because we can expect to be more technically advanced doesn't mean people will change. Often in marriage, one spouse will end up steering the boat. It has a lot more to do with personality than with gender. He may be very accomodating of his wife's wishes, but he's a pretty independent guy. I don't see him as ever being barefoot and chained to a replicator. :)
