Are Ferengi against prenuptual agreements?
In Deep Space Nine, Lita, consider Lita, a dabbo girl who works for Quark (a dabbo girl seems to be an ambiguous cross between a hostess and a prostitute). Quark's brother Rom proposes marriage to her and she agrees, but balks when Rom wants her to sign a prenuptual agreement stating that she won't be entitled to his property. When she refuses, Rom calls the marriage off, but Lita stays firm. In the end, Rom agrees to marry her without the prenuptual agreement, although he does so by giving all his money away to charity.
What is Star Trek saying here about gender roles? By casting the prenuptual agreement as an avaristic Ferengi legal tool, the show is saying that contractual agreements between men and women intended to keep the wealth in the hands of the men are patently unfair and merely perpetuate the gap in income and wealth between the sexes.
