TV-Commentary - Star Trek: The Next Generation
Was Tasha Yar a lesbian amazon?
By the time Next Generation went on the air, the role of women had changed markedly. Women wearing pants, and, on occasion, men were wearing skirts! (In the first season of Next Generation, you could sometimes see a male extra in the background wearing what looked like a skirt). With the possible exception of Counselor Troi, women had reached equality in uniforms.

Women had reached equality in rank, too. The top ranking female job in Classic Trek, the job of communications officer, was so unimportant that it was eliminated in successive Star Trek series. However, in Next Generation women held the roles of several senior officers--security, medical, and.... counseling.

The most significant job was that of security chief. Traditionally in the Classic series 100% of the security guards were large, beefy men. In Next Generation, many security guards are women, and the female security chief, Tasha Yar, had an aggressive, take-no-prisoners aggressive instinct that easily could have been played by a man.

Tasha, with her square jaw, female crewcut, and security pants uniform showed that women could be just as tough as men could. She (as well as Worf) is always the warhawk on the show, always the one advocating the use of weapons and heightened security measures. Tasha shined the most, however, In "Code of Honor", where she battled an alien namedYarina with a nasty poison tipped glove that killed with just a scratch. This episode alone showed how far Next Generation had come: in Classic Trek, Kirk would be the one doing all the hand to hand fighting. In this episode, Tasha did all the heavy lifting, while the calmly cerebral Picard stood by and watched!

Although Tasha did prove she could be tough, there was one episode where she had a Classic Trek relapse. In "Hide and Q", Tasha is consigned to an imaginery "penalty box" by Q. When Tasha learns this she starts to cry in Captain Picard's arms. One can't imagine Worf, or Kirk or Spock crying in anyone's arms after bieng put in a penalty box. But this episode was an anomaly for Tasha rather than the rule and overall she showed that women could be just as tough as men... at least until Tasha's character was killed off, midway through the first season. (However, they did bring her back several years later as a ruthless Romulan....)

What Star Trek is saying here, in a general sense is that women are tough enough to handle any jobs that men can. More specifically, the show is strongly advocating combat roles for women in the military. Some people believe that women aren't tough enough, emotionally and physically, to serve in frontline combat units in our armed forces. But Tasha showed that women could do just as well as men in that regard.
