Return to The Phantom Menace main page TV-Commentary - The Phantom Menace Character summaries R2-D2: Largely unchanged, although this younger, sleeker version of R2 is more naive about the world and doesn't yet have such a jaded attitude about life that it does in the later films. 3PO: Viewers will delight in hearing 3-PO's prissy, feminine tones, but with one important difference: he has a transparent outer skin! Enjoy watching him a digest a can of motor oil as it oozes through his mechanical intestines.... Jabba the Hutt: This is an earlier version of Jabba. Weighing only 5,000 pounds, he had only begun to put on weight and is merely corpulent. Obi-Wan Kenobi: Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan. A younger, crew-cutted Obi Wan, he liks a bit like Chris O'Donnell from the "Batman" movies, which is appropriate, since he plays Robin to Qui-Gon's Batman. Qui-Gon: Liam Neeson plays the senior Jedi who has the unfortunate misfortune to get in the way of Darth Maul's lightsaber. Perhaps if he had majored in advanced lightsabering instead of robe design at the Jedi academy he might've made something more of himself. Queen Amidalaa: She's the Darth bate. Anakin Skywalker: A little boy with the Bill Gates haircut and an attitude to match. He hasn't developed the respiratory problems and chokehold that will make him famous in later years, but even as a boy can use Force-enhanced crying jags to almost lethal affect. Yoda: Take 50 years off the age of a wizened, wrinkled, greenish shrimp, and what do you get? A wizened, wrinkled, greenish shrimp. Did Yoda ever consider getting a facelift? "There is no try, only do." Darth Maul: A Darth with a pointy head, a bad attitude, and a double-edged lightsaber that's great both for slicing up enemies and shaving in the morning. A product of neglected upbringing, Darth Maul undoubtedly would have been a great lawyer or politician if he hadn't the product of a neglected upbringing in the pit of the Sarlac. Darth Sidious: Darth Maul's boss, he gets all the best chicks, robots, and battledroids. When he becomes ruler of the galaxy he actually plans to buy some real clothes for himself. He's the "Phantom Menace", a title that would have been considerably more sinister if it hadn't conjured up images of Shaggy and Scooby Doo. Senator Palpatine: A mild mannered bureaucrat with a taste for power and an inside line on Darth Sidious's tailor.
