1.The Jedi were the protectors of the Republic (not that they did so hot)
2.Who was the Republic going to invade? A nearby galaxy? Unless martial law was put down I don't see what power an army would grant the Republic or who they would fight against.
3. Before the Clone War the Republic was mainly based on solving problems with deplomacy and peace, as seen with their use of Jedi to solve problems. (Besides, the only talk of a full scale war occured in Phantom having one beforehand would be a waste.)

the republic was run by politically correct liberals who were afraid an army might offend their enemies.

What's the big deal with the Galactic Republic not having an army? The French don't have an army, either. Of course, they've been invaded more times than Madonna!

The Jedi were diplomats. And with their Jedi Mind tricks, they were the best. If time came to it, they would settle it by force. But The Galaxy at that time respected the Jedi above all else. They also feared them. These are the people who took out the Mandolorians. Think of them as the Klingons of the Star Wars Universe.

Ok well remember Obi 1 went to Kamino and he found out that the Clone Army belonged to them but... the Jedi didn't plan on making an army someone asked for it before discussing it with ohter Jedi's and then Palpatine took the Army and he and Darthy used it in 4,5 and Epi 6!! I may be wrong but this is al I can remember.

Before the Clone troopers came, the Republic didn't have any army. I think that was messed up. How could they just rely on the jedi?

Are you an idiot? Havent you figuered out that the clone army was there army? Do you pay attention at all to the movies? Remember in episode II, Obi went to Kamino and they told him that an army has been requested by the jedi? Sheesh, pay attention!

From waht I have heard there were 10,000 Jedi at the beginning of Phantom Menace under ordinary circumstances that should be enough to keep a peacefull republic in order, if things get bad send 1000 jedi to clean it up but the Droid army was supposed to be about 3,000,000 droids constructed in secret 10,000 agaist 3,000,000 is like 300 to 1 a bit overwhelming if you assume that many of those 10,000 Jedi were second stringers you gotta bet only mabey 50 or so were first rate guys. You gotta believe that many of the Jedi would have been overwhelmed by 30 battle droids, also the Jedi had no artillery and probabally didn't have any first rate ships of the line.

This has been an ongoing arguement for years in politics... Each side has it's EB and Flo. I mean in Utopia of course you wouldn't need an Army, there is no war in such a place, but in any reality were humaniods are involved there is obviously no possible way of maintaining a Utopia. Evil is in fact a part of our nature. And I know we love to call the jedi coucil stupid but I think George was really trying to show us (through their blindness and stupidity) that even the mighty Zen like Jedi weren't perfect and suffered from a scourge of evil. Their self confidence (noted by Yoda) is what helped them be clouded or stupid as much as the dark side of the force did. Their self confidence was their own dark side and it was growing stronger. The point being each civilization (Sumarian, Roman, Greek, Amercian) creates it's own version of a perfect empire and laws for existence and the one thing that has remained constant is the people inablitiy to adhere to their own principles. At the end of the day all great and lasting civilizations fall from within first and then from without, no army can or will change that. Everybody kept talking about working for the good of the republic but acted on achieving their own Agenda (thinking or at least convincing themselves that it was for the good fo the republic). Had the republic worked like it was supposed to with everyone truly giving up selfish agendas for the good of the republic it would have workded. In a perfect society with unselfish and more perfect individuals 1,500 star systems could easily muster up a defense force to handle any situation. And as I said in the beginning, with more perfect and unselfish citizens how often would you have a situation where you would even need that?

Obviously they could. An army could be seen more as a danger to peace and order than the keeper of it. Look at Palp, one corrupt ruler + an army and we got an evil galactic empire.
Btw, during feodalism the king never had a standing army either. Power was not centralized. Each planets have their own troops and if any planet revolt the other can rally their combined troops and take care of the problem. But now a standing army was developed (which in real world indicated the end of feodalism) and the cooperations (like the Trade Federations) where getting very powerfull and created own armies, etc. And then we had war.

Methinks we should go to Lucas' sources. See some Kurosawa movies! Can't have a bunch of peasants with blasters making things rough for the Jedi/Samurai. Gotta set the tone. Seriously, I think that there would be more of a Militia that would be mustered from each planet at need. Think of the planets as states in the old US Republic.

the entier galaxy was united, there was no need for an army of the republic. anyhow, each planet pretty much had an army that could be called upon if danger was in that sector.
