Could anyone except a Nerd wearing Vulcan ears defend the first season?
Now that the first season has almost ended, could anyone but the most rabid Star Trek fan who will watch anything with the ST name attached (demographically someone who (a) lives in parents basement (b) never kissed a girl and (c) knows the combination to Kirk's safe) defend the first season of Enterprise?
Let's take a quick runthrough of the episodes, shall we?
I Good
Broken Bow (Not bad--at least some suspense)
Strange New World (Conflict between characters)
Fallen Hero (Interesting Vulcan conflict COMBINED with action of being chased)
II Bad
A) PC Episodes
Unexpected (Trip gets pregnant--very exciting)
Terra Nova (Must be humble to mud faced aliens)
Fortunate Sun (Finding common ground with Nausican pirates)
Dear Doctor (Nothing happens as Enterprise agonizes about the local savages)
Rogue Planet (Must help oppressed local slugs)
Detained (We learn that the only enemy so far on Enterprise, the Suliban, are people too.)
Vox Sola (Learning to be sensitive to attacking blob).
B) Nothing happens
Fight or Flight (most of episode is agonizing over what to do)
Breaking the Ice (most of episode is spent over T'Pol's feelings; asteroid is small B plot)
Civilization (finding polluting aliens--plot progression very slow)
Silent Enemy (Mostly about Malcolm's favorite food--small B plot about attacking aliens).
Cold Front (Non-Gripping drama about... stealing a datapad)
Sleeping Dogs (Verrrry slow drama about being trapped on Klingon ship--so slow that T'Pol gives Hoshi a hand job for filler).
Fusion (A frisky Vulcan comes on to T'Pol--no other plot).
Oasis (Another Odo holodeck episode)
Two days and two nights (4 non-stories on Risa)
C) Crew Beaten Up/Suffering
The Andorian Incident (Archer/T'Pol captured; Archer beaten up)
Shadows of P'Jem (Archer/T'Pol captured; Archer beaten up)
Shuttlepod One (Trip/Reed moaning for an hour; really unbearable)
Acquisition (Archer gets beaten up)
Desert Crossing (Archer, Trip stuck in desert)
Note that some of the episodes in the "Nothing happened" category could have been interesting if they had been B stories paired with an A story that had some action or suspense. But overall Rick Berman seems content with grinding out more dull and/or lame stories where not much happens, where what Malcolm eats is more important than the tension of being chased by an alien spaceship.
As for the characters:
Mayweather: Very bland
Malcolm Reed: Extremely Effeminite
Phlox: Neelix warmed over
Hoshi: Uhura II
Archer: Country Bumpkin do-gooder.
Trip: The only good one with personality.
T'Pol: Not bad, but not witty like Spock.
In short, most of the characters suffer from the same blandness that the storylines do.

I think that Enterprise is a great modern version of star trek, much less geeky, and I def dont live in my parents basement... so why dont you write about something that isn't so much bigger than ur tiny self...
