Books-Commentary - J.R.R. Tolkien
Were Sam and Frodo, and Gimli and Legolas, secret lovebirds?
Look, I don't usually look for things that aren't there, but didn't you think it was just a little bit odd that Sam was always kissing Frodo's hand, or touching his brow, or calling him, "Master?" What exactly was Frodo to Sam--his employer, right? Frodo wasn't a king, and yet Sam acted like a Servant, or, in some cases, a paramour. You didn't see Gandalf kissing anyone's hand, or Elrond kissing anyone's hand. I mean, I know JRR was British, and maybe they do that sort of thing in England, but still it seems strange.

Another thing--why was Sam so keen on going to Mordor with Frodo? It seemed mighty dangerous. Even if Sam liked him as an employer, or a friend, going to Mordor was more than just a "friend" kind of thing to do. The only explanation I can think of is that he had a special attachment to Frodo. Lovers? You decide.

And what about Gimli and Legolas? Ok, in the first part of the trilogy they weren't exactly buddies, but that quickly changed; by the end of the third book, they were together so much, "friend Gimli" this and "friend Legolas" that, worrying about each other when they weren't in eye contact, that I just thought, "Hey, guys, why don't you get a room!" You also notice how Gimli and Legolas never got married? Do you think that would make sense… if they were already married to each other?

Come to think of it, didn't you think it just the tiniest bit odd that unmarried Bilbo invites Frodo, a young boy, to move in with him? Other hobbits called this "queer". What exactly was going on there?

first of all, with this merrie or merry debate, the actual name is meriadoc. they just vall him merry for short, same as pippin is actually perigrin. also, don't you think that going to hell and back would make you good friends? look at what they all went through together! sam had a girl he was interested in in the beginning and that he latter married and had kids with, and we don't know if grimli and legolas had wives or not. also, bilbo adopted frodo because he didn't want bag end to go to the sacksfil-baggins, who he hated. I personally think its refreshing to see a good action movie without a lot of romance getting in the way.

The commentator Annonymous posts on 7/21/2008 4:09:07 AM

Sam and Frodo had a great relationship as the story went on. Tolkien never ment them to be portrayed as lovers. They simply became very close while risking there lives together. ;]

they werent gay frodo and sam were on a mission, frodo couldnt have dont it alone obviously thats why they had 9 of them going...sam had to help him. sam also gets married in the end. gimli and legolas didnt get along because no dwarf and elf did. after running across a country together and saving each others asses everyday i would think they would become best friends dont you?

i just watched the movie again and really....so what if they are gay? I don't think they are actually but the world recognises that gay heros do exist. Time to get your prejudices out of the closet and grow up. Half of you should also learn to spell... :)

Jeez posts on 10/29/2006 9:58:02 AM

Jamies does it matter how we spell it as long as we now what there talking about? Nanners- maybe they call him merry because back then it was a boy name sorry I have no idea. But good question.

The commentator James Miller posts on 10/29/2006 4:21:01 AM

Nanners, if you listen closely you'll find the hobbit you think is called "Marrie!" is ACTUALLY called MERRY. Sorted.

NANNERS posts on 10/26/2006 5:05:56 PM

Not that I'm trying to focus a different question here; it's related... Why is it that one of the hobbits from the book that set off the fireworks was named "Marrie"? I just find that a bit strange. I don't think it's gay, I just wonder why he's called Marrie.

Streamstorm posts on 10/26/2006 12:01:13 PM

I am sorry but who would make a board like this with people talking about being gay? I think everyone should block this board I meen its called being mature- that means acting your age.

The commentator James Miller posts on 10/26/2006 4:48:24 AM

1.We're talking about a different time, a different culture. Tolkien had gone through the unimaginable horrors of the 1st World War, losing all but one of his close childhood friends. Think about how that would affect a person. 2.In times of great trauma, people form close ties of fellowship, heterosexual or otherwise. 3. A real friend accompanies you even through the darkest times in your life. I respect you mate, but you have some maturing to do. Take care, byee!

       posts on 10/9/2006 3:57:18 PM

Obviously....you are too immature to talk about things that are actually WORTH talking about. Tolkien was a cristian. Cristians believe that homosexuality goes against Gods laws. It's somewhere in the book of Exodus..I think. Even if you ARE going to blab, at least know somewhat about your subject of which you are running your mouth. THANKS AND PEACE OUT

       posts on 10/9/2006 3:50:24 PM

Dude! You really SHOULD get a life. Think, it was written in Britain and written , what, fifty years go. It's just really good friendships. Go save your NASTY thoughts to someone like yourself, instead of having people like us having to even say something about it. It's Just WRONG and your JUST WRONG! (I mean wrong by weird or nasty, not meaning right or wrong. Actually, let's say both!)

       posts on 10/9/2006 12:14:40 PM

Cough loudly. I'm English, and we do not do stuff like that! Your retarded!

       posts on 10/9/2006 9:44:19 AM

Whoever wrote that message you really need to get a life! The internet used to be a good thing, how many years, way back when....but they didn't need spam blockers and spyware and all that stuff that guards our computers from people like you. Sam followed Frodo into Mordor because he was loyal to his friend. The reason he was "touching his hand" is because Tolkein thought that was a friendly show of emotion and that made Frodo and Sam seem so much more close, in the friend-like way. So if you think some of the characters in the books are queer, go ahead: BUT WE DON'T CARE! Just try not to make the rest of us feel sick to our stomachs while reading a great piece of literary work and then find that someone had to mess it up. ~A Tolkien fan and well wisher

       posts on 8/18/2006 5:16:06 AM

so a couple of guys jumping up and down in a bed is gay? I use to do that when I was like 6 and....I still do that sometimes with my college roommates, provided we don't break the bed. wrestling eachother in a friendly way and that sort of stuff isn't un-heard-of in my dorm. That doesn't make us gay. which part of america are you from? it's all just innocent good fun with friends. the hobbits were just affectionate with each other.

       posts on 5/14/2006 12:04:07 PM

i sooo agree AOU.... how could lego and gim and sam and fro be gay? you sooooo are making a deal out of this, i have read the books so there. huh

       posts on 5/13/2006 12:20:21 AM

How can you even presume that Frodo and Sam are gay...? It was more of a mixture of fatherlyhood on Sams part and brothers in a sense. Not counting the small fact that J.R.R Tolkien would probably never even think of such ideas. He was a modern christain, and from what i heard- he even helped support an anti-gay thingy once he started getting on in his years. By the way, can someone plz answer me this question: Why is it that everyone on this site tends to either know a VERY extensive amount about the books, or are just plain stupid...? W/e, for all those people that care about the books-I solute you with two fingers. But for all those people who dont-I solute you with one, have a nice day!

       posts on 4/23/2006 10:54:39 PM

Yea well I actually like gay guys. Theyr'e nice and they don't steal your girlfreinds. And they throw the wildest friday night parties...

The commentator Chris posts on 4/3/2006 8:42:04 PM

It's so traumatic, they're all gay. Even the ones with girlfriends, they were gay too. As a matter of fact, let's make this easy on everyone. Everyone on TV is gay. And so are the Producers and PA's and all the extras and writers of every movie to ever exist. Hollywood is trying to come out of the closet. Oh dear GOD! Whatever shall we do? You know what, harry potter was gay. And so was sleepless in seatle. And you know what, so was star trek and finding nemo. I think everyone should just admit that the reason they think everything is gay is because they hope it actually is, because it would give people something to talk about. Everyone is bored these days, so just go join the giant hollywood gay orgy and grow a beard, you too lady dwarfs.

The commentator Darren posts on 3/18/2006 12:50:13 AM

Gimli and Legolas were not gay. Not even a hint of it. Sam and Frodo, on the other hand, were definitely gay. And I always thought it strange that Tolkein wrote a story where romance wasn't center stage. In virtually every other book out there, the main character has some kind of romance going on. In this story it's strangely absent - unless, of course, we realize that the leading lady is Sam!
