Was Patrick McGoohan on drugs when he wrote Fallout?
People either love or hate fallout. I fall into the lattermost category. It was said to be filled full of metaphor about society, technology, and politics, and not meant to be interpreted literally. I think it's ok to have things on a symbolic level, as long as there's also a practical level too. Where did the rocket go? How could #6 also be #1? Why did the rovers sing? Why was there so much singing in general?
The lack of any practical realism obscured any other message the episode was presenting and made for a bizarre, unenjoyable, episode. The fact that popular anger with the episode forced Patrick McGoohan to hide in the mountains for weeks after the episode aired showed that many agreed with my analysis.

If you recall in at least one episode many of the #2s gave spoken reports to an offscreen character (#1?)in which he requested and was denied permission to use "stronger methods" to extract information from #6
I've seem to recall this episode including #2 recieving permission to use one of the stronger methods
The disjointed storyline was to show the damaging effects of the 'stronger measures' and demonstrate why the administration didn't want them used.
I've also heard that McGoohan intended it as an anti-drug type story

I thought that by the time #6 and the viewers arrived at this point, that his mind was so fried by different drugs and other things the village folk did to him, that what he saw was just his perception and not necessarily what was happening. The butler went home with him to take care of him, because he was too much of a basket case to live by himself.
