What bothered me about Tom Bombadil being left out was that we missed the barrow wrights. The burial mounds were Merry and Pippin ended up getting their swords. They were swords of old belonging to the Numenor so when Merry stabs the Black rider his blade is especially effective.

FINALLY! I have told the same thing about those parts of the books, and they think I'm a nag. I completely agree with u. whenever I get to those parts I always skip over 'em.

The changes in the story by Jackson I thought took away from the story. Leaving out Tom Bombardi,Old man Willow,Glorifil, his girlfriend, having Arwin rescue Frodo from the ringwraths.
I shudder to think that 90 percent of the movie viewers have no idea of the true story. Only Jackson's version.

i just wanted to say that the two "boring" parts mentioned at the very top might have seemed boring but were nevertheless justified.
Tom Bombadil is a charcter that Tolkien used before, in another story. if you´ve
read that one, his appearance will make more sense and not seem so unnecessary.
the gathering of the ents was important just to see what a friggin' hard piece of work it is to get these guys moving and thus makes merry and pippin more important charachters. kind of.

ok... to answer the question, the council of elrond (in the book)was really boring. its 50,000 words of people talking who you have never even heard of

Rubbish. Absolute rubbish, Tolkien would cry if he saw this!

Well the rumor for awhile was that Frodo and Sam were lovers. But that one died down. But the rumor was entirely destroyed after Sam married Rosie. I still can't believe Sam had SEVEN kids. You go GAMGEE!

There was no worst part in the books, I think, but in the movies the worst bit was when at the end I was waiting for the good bit where they find Saruman at Bag End and IT NEVER HAPPENED! If they had done that it would have made me so happy.
And also, when Frodo gets on the boat at the Grey Havens and he looks back and smiles it went on for like five minutes and he began to look like a girl, for some reason.

That's one of the weirdest things, though! In LOTR, they always think someone's dead but they aren't. In the film, they went so far as to add them thinking Aragorn's dead.

At the end of the ROTK movie an Orc should have come out and shown the mith. shirt, making Aragorn, Gandalph, and the others think Frodao and Sam had been taken and probably killed. Then when Aragorn says, "For Frodo," it would hold the meaning and feeling it held in the book. It really would have helped hype up the emotion at the end. I think they should have had to fight for The Shire also, like in the book.

the worst part of the books/movei is at the end of return of the king. when frodo and sam are staring deep into each others eyes. if they were gay why did sam marry that chick.

The whole of the movies were excellent, except maybe... oh wait, nevermind.
In the book, however, I had a bit of trouble maintaining my concentration in the Paths of the Dead and the Old Forest.
And just for the Record: I have ROTK right here. The following ages are taken at 3018TA when the fellowship was formed.
Frodo Baggins: Age 50
Samwise Gamgee: Age 35 (same age as Faramir)
Perigrin Took and Meridoc Brandybuck are not listed in the LoTR timeline. However, one could probably find their ages in the books. I think Pippin said he was about 30-something in Minas Tirith.
Oh, and one more thing: there are actually 6 books. There are two in each one.

Pippin gave his age as 29 in RotK. Merry was approx. 37.

Merry's age confuses me, cuz he was working for Frodo on his thity-third beirthday and they treated him like an adult and then 17 years later when frodo was fifty they said he was still a tween.

no, i don't think merry is even 38. man, i just read it the other day... because you are considered an adult when you are thirty, and he made some comment like he was not quite an adult yet. so anywho, along the lines of the worst part: when gandalf, aragorn, theoden, etc. are riding to isengard after the battle of helm's deep (in the book) it's pretty boring. because you are seeing the aftermath of everything and it's just description description of things you don't understand... so yeah.

here's the thing jack. the first was my favorite of the three. this is because for some reason, the EVIL struck me the most, and the STAKES and the fear. there was more emotion. then there was the fact that legolas didn't seem to spout quite so many cheesy lines. that 'crebain from dunland' was quite well executed, i think. and not to mention, boromir was in it, and galadriel as well. the end was amazing too, but the evil wasn't so prominent.

The end of the third movie was chopped The shire was still being held captive by saruman. the fab four were supposed to rescue the shire. Saruman was supposed to be killed by worm tongue at bagg end.The barrow downs / Tom Bombadill were chopped from the first movie. That is where the hobbits found their weapons. Much of the golden wood story was cut out. The books had enough content in them to make 6 movies.
